Wellstone Memorial II

Back in October 2002, numerous bigwigs of the Democratic Party gathered in Minnesota for a tribute to Paul Wellstone, who died in a plane crash near the northern Minnesota town of Hibbing. Instead of honoring a decent man that night, they turned it into a Democratic campaign rally. That happened again today at Coretta Scott-King’s memorial. Here’s some of the political cheapshots from today’s service:

The funeral took on political overtones as former President Jimmy Carter said of the Kings: “It was difficult for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps.” Later, he said that Hurricane Katrina showed that all are not yet equal in America.

And both Bush and his father winced as they sat behind the pulpit and heard the Rev. Joseph Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr., take several jabs at foreign and domestic policies.

“We know there were no weapons of mass destruction over there, but Coretta knew and we knew there are weapons of misdirection right down here,” Lowery said, complaining that were far too many in the U.S. are living in poverty and without health care insurance. “For war, billions more, but no more for the poor,” Lowery continued, a take-off of a lyric from the song “A Time to Love” which drew a roaring standing ovation.

Jimmy Carter disgraced himself yesterday by saying:

“Under the Bush administration, there’s been a disgraceful and illegal decision, we’re not going to the let the judges or the Congress or anyone else know that we’re spying on the American people,” Carter told reporters. “And no one knows how many innocent Americans have had their privacy violated under this secret act.”

He said this knowing that he’d see President Bush today. That didn’t deter him in the least. To make matters worse, he cites the wiretapping of MLK knowing that that was done by Bobby Kennedy. He further cited the pictures of African-Americans in the streets of New Orleans, which has been run by Democrats seemingly forever.

In other words, Carter tried cheapshotting President Bush but instead indicted RFK and Mayor Nagin, who both happen to be DEMOCRATS.

In any event, this was supposed to be about Mrs. King and remembering her many achievements and her admirable qualities and what she stood for and fought for. Just like the Wellstone Memorial was supposed to be about Wellstone. Instead, Democrats turned it into just another Hate Bush fest.

That’s hardly the way to remember the greatness of Mrs. King.
