Israel: “The Right to Defense”
And Iran’s death wish.
Ed Koch has penned a great column for Jewish World Review, with Israel’s response to Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s threat. Last weekend, Ahmadinejad told the world that Israel “must be wiped off the map.” Countries that recognize Israel, he said, would “burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury.”
It’s obvious that Ahmadinejad has a death wish since he knows that his military isn’t a match with Israel’s. Frankly, Iran’s nuclear stockpile, if it exists, is toast the minute Israel learns its location.
Koch then writes:
“Israel has the right to self-defense under UN Charter Article 51, as does every other UN member country. Must Israel wait until Iran’s nuclear bomb is launched against it or should it act now to defend its people?”
Clearly, the answer is that Israel doesn’t have to wait until the missile is in flight. The threat of war should suffice. Yes, I know that there’s countries that will decry Israel’s violence, etc. That means little to me because a tiny nation like Israel would be destroyed with a single nuclear missile. For that matter, it’d likely take out Lebanon and Jordan, two countries with sizeable Christian populations.
Koch concludes by stating:
Many Americans would like to see President Bush politically weakened, even though we are at war. Of course, criticism of the President on a host of issues is justified, and I join in it regularly. But when it comes to foreign policy, criticism should be respectful and responsible, and not done with glee and venom, as is often now the case. America and its future should be our paramount concern, not partisan political advantage.
I’ve frequently agreed with Koch’s mindset in this time of war, though I didn’t agree with him recently when he said that it’s time to start bringing troops home ASAP. The “glee and venom” that the Hate America crowd demonstrates in all matters military should be revolting to the Democratic establishment.
Unfortunately, the inmates now run the Democratic prison.

“Glee and venom”? Hmmm… Let’s recal the glee and venom with which the Repubs every chance they get attack anyone who opposes the Bushite policies, calling them “unpatriotic”, “unAmerican”, “aiding the enemy” etc. as if everyone knows that the most freedom-loving thing someone can do is to be sheep-like in their agreement, marching in lockstep with whatever current fiasco of a policy the Bushites decide to implement no matter how corrupt and wrongheaded. Yeah, just wrap it all up in the flag and paint anyone who disagrees as a “traitor”. Who started that trend?…Oh yeah, the Nazis.
