Khatami: Islamic World Ready for Change

I can’t say that that headline, from Vijay Joshi’s article is totally surprising. I remember reading an article about 8 months ago that said that Iraqis, Lebanese and Syrians viewed their governments as oppressors. That’s why I hope the US sponsors an armed revolt in Iran. The young people think of the mullahs as oppressors who’d like living a western lifestyle.

It’s also worth noting that a big majority of Iranians are young people who don’t really remember the Iranian hostage crisis. The young people are rebellious and they’ve shown it by going against the mullahs orders. When the mullahs issued a fatwa saying that women had to wear traditional black in public, the women wore yellow or red in public with much of their face revealed. That’s just one example of their rebellion against the mullahs.

“After about two centuries of dispute between tradition and modernity in the world of Islam (there is) a high level of mental preparation for the acceptance of a major transformation in the mind and lives of Muslims,” Khatami said in a speech at an international conference on Islam and the West.

What virtue is found in a dictatorial regime that suppresses freedom and demands unquestioned uniformity? History shows again and again that the only way these types of leaders stay in power is through overwhelming military force on their own citizens. It isn’t because their ideas have any appeal. It isn’t because their personality has won millions of people over.

Let the revolution begin.
