S.F. Chronicle reports: “President Bush should replace Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with new leaders in charge of the war effort who will start pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq, a downbeat Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Monday.”

“I say it’s time to change course, to bring in another team,” the California Democratic senator told 350 business leaders in San Jose. “We should not be putting American soldiers in the middle of a civil war with targets on their backs.”

Feinstein has criticized Rumsfeld’s handling of the war in Iraq for more than a year, but Monday’s speech was the first time she had called for him to be fired.

Feinstein has been attacked by many California Democrats for her vote three years ago to allow Bush the use of military force in Iraq and for her ongoing reluctance to call for a complete withdrawal of U.S. troops.

While the senator made it clear she wants to see major changes in the conduct of the war, she continues to oppose an immediate pullout.

“We all know we can’t cut and run,” Feinstein told reporters after the speech to the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. “What I’m talking about is changing the nature of this mission.”

Meanwhile, AP reports:

Insurgents stormed a jail around dawn Tuesday in the Sunni Muslim heartland north of Baghdad, killing 19 police and a courthouse guard in a prison break that freed at least 33 prisoners and left 10 attackers dead, authorities said.

As many as 100 insurgents armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades stormed the judicial compound in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles northeast of the capital. The assault began after the attackers fired a mortar round into the police and court complex, said police Brig. Ali al-Jabouri.

It’s not a civil war. It’s a fight against those who strive to promote instability. A perpetuation of chaos.

We are dealing with radicals who object to democracy as much as they do freedom of religion. And they will do anything to prevent it. That is why we’re needed.
