Able Danger Update

It seems like the Able Danger won’t go away despite the best attempts of the DoD and the 9/11 ‘Ommission’. James Rosen has written an article for McClatchy Newspapers that’s got some delicious quotes. Here’s a couple of my favorites:

“By the way he talks about Able Danger these days, you’d think it would have prevented Pearl Harbor,” said Timothy Roemer, a former Indiana [Democratic]congressman and member of the 9/11 commission.

Mr. Roemer, don’t be so smug. What Representative Weldon is saying that 9/11 might have been prevented had your fellow commissioner Jamie Gorelick built a legal wall that prevented the Able Danger crew from alerting the FBI to the actions of some of the 9/11 hijackers, including Mohammed Atta, something that a number of people will testify to. Those willing to testify include Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, Army Maj. Eric Kleinsmith and Navy Capt. Scott Philpott.

Further complicating things for the 9/11 ‘Ommission’ is that Kristin Breitweiser, a 9/11 widow, is wondering why the 9/11 ‘Ommission’ hasn’t looked into Able Danger more. Here’s her quote:

“It’s very upsetting to hear people tell you that your husband and the father of your children didn’t have to die because we had information to stop the attacks,” Breitweiser said in an interview.

“As more and more information is coming out, more and more Americans are questioning how this attack could have happened,” Breitweiser said. “We’re finding out we are not being told the truth. A lot of information was known, and the attacks could have been prevented.”

I’m glad I’m not one of the 9/11 commissioners because this is a issue that’s best played out in the court of public opinion. These commissioners won’t get away with not answering Ms. Breitweiser’s questions. It’s obvious that she’s persistent, she’s a sympathetic figure and she’s got a legitimate axe to grind.

In short, she’s a PR nightmare if you aren’t on her side.
