Texas Gov. Plans “Virtual” Border Patrol

Yes, it does sound like our current program. But read on.

AP reports: “Texas Gov. Rick Perry unveiled plans on Thursday to place hundreds of surveillance cameras along the Rio Grande and stream the images to the Internet so computer users everywhere can help patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sounds like a promising idea, but executing is the challenge.

Speaking to a gathering of sheriffs from border counties, Perry said virtual border patrollers spotting illegal immigrants would be able to call a toll-free phone number to report them to Texas authorities.

“A stronger border is what Americans want and it’s what our security demands and that is what Texas is going to deliver,” he said.

Actually, lack of enforcement of our existing laws is the problem.

Currently, we can identify plenty of illegal immigrants, know their whereabouts, and would contact both local and federal authorities to apprehend them. But they won’t, and that’s why immigration has gotten out of hand.

Nevertheless, at least Gov. Perry is thinking in the right direction, increasing security by leveraging technology, and we credit him for that.
