25 To Life: STOP THE RELEASE
“One obvious concern is that of the police and the gang members, the thugs are clearly romanticized making them seem more fun to play.
[A]s a thug, you can take the no-holds-barred approach. You’ll have access to anything and everything that can be used to take people out, so the thug still seems like the more glamorous of the two sides. The differences in aiming and posture are a really nice touch … Police move taking careful aim in a tight crouch, while the thugs will wave submachine guns sideways.”– Frictionless Insight, 5/25/04
“25 to Life is the game the streets have been waiting for … See the world of 25 to Life as you try to survive life on the grind as a rising thug forced into action-packed situations.
Set in the heart of today’s cities, experience the gritty lifestyles of police task forces or as a gangster survive the local neighborhood thugs while fighting your way up the ranks. Bust out of prison, or infiltrate the inner sanctum of the drug lord’s mansion, your knowledge of the streets will be put to the test because… 25 to Life IS the streets!”– tothegame.com, (includes several screenshots)
“My son just joined the LAPD. All he wants to do is help others. What kind of people would create a game that glorifies the killing of my son and making his lovely wife a widow? What kind of people market games that give points for making my little grandson an orphan?“ — Rhett Mitchell, concerned citizen and father of an LAPD officer
25 to Life: A Clear and Present Danger
Mr. Mitchell recently contacted CaliforniaConservative.org, asking for our assistance to spread the word, alerting others about 25 to Life.
We investigated the story and offer an exclusive report written by Clark Baker, contributing blogger and a retired LAPD officer.
On the basis of our research, we are asking our readers, parents, lawmakers and the blogging community to join us in keeping this so-called “game” off the streets and out of children’s hands.
America and the world has enough problems dealing with youth crime and corruption. We don’t need something that promotes murder and violence as entertainment and skill.

Check out the cover of the game as well as the screenshots. See who they’re marketing to.
And we wonder why there are a disproportionate amount of young black men in prison!!
While some are busy crying racism, they are ignoring the pervasive culture of glorifying violence and thug/gangster lifestyle that exists within the black community.
And crap like this isn’t helping.
Thanks for getting the word out about this game.

While I agree that this contributes to the pervasive culture of violence, especially in the black community, I believe the crime rate is more a cultural norm and a failure of parenting in the black community, where a large number of absent fathers has not helped raise law-abiding children. Sadly, this game is not going to have that much of an impact, I feel, on whether blacks continue to turn to crime or not. I think that a wholesale change of the entire black culture is needed, and while stopping these video games is as good a place to start as any, without that change I don’t believe that video games will have much of an effect on this segment of our citizens.
However, I predict that over the next decade it could show more heavily as a contributing factor in the number of white, middle class kids that turn to crime that would otherwise not have been expected to follow that path.
I realize that sounds either racist or bigoted, depending upon the readers knowledge of those words, (and I can assure the reader that it is bigoted and NOT racist), but the fact remains that those in the lower economic strata of society turn to crime at a much higher rate than those in the higher strata, and the fact remains that whites outnumber blacks in those higher income brackets.

Killing cops in video games is fine with me and I have been a cop for over 14 years. It’s not real! Fot those of you that say this video game is wrong because it shows cop killing should get off your moral high horse and face a thing called reality. This is America not China. Cop killing is not glorified anymore than any other form of violence we see in movies, TV and video games. Also, the Governor of California killed dozens of cops in his movies and nobody said he should not hold the office he holds for that reason. Police Officers in California dislike him for other things he has done. Real reasons, that have to do with everyday life not because of what he did as an actor in action movies or in video games. Ban video games, next you will want to ban movies and books.

Ben, are you ,perhaps, a member of the NOPD?
October 4th, 2005 at 3:46 pm
No, CHP. Matt, are you perhaps a smug, pompous law-breaker with no or little respect for those that protect and serve you?
October 4th, 2005 at 4:09 pm
A little investigation goes a long way. Matt happens to be an attorney! A personal injury attorney, no less. I’m not surprised!
October 4th, 2005 at 5:59 pm
‘Uhh, not to be all hysterical over something I know almost nothing about, but, like, didja know you can play the game as the cops?
It’s a game, folks, it doesn’t endorse killing anybody anymore than any other game. Sheesh. I thought we’d all figured this one out by now.

william and the seminar poster are protesting california conservative’s protest. this is the american way. i think it’s fine that the former are offering their objections and i’m certain that it could be worthwhile discussion.
i think it’s fine also that california conservative is trying to gather other citizens around his (their?) stand against this creeping epidemic of nihilism and ambivalence of which this game is a symptom.
i don’t think race is relevant to this stand. this game was authored primarily by white kids and will be consumed primarily by white kids. there is a disturbing sort of role playing that is reflected in the game when seen in that context; serving the same function for white boys as mandingo did for white girls, but i don’t think what we fear is this game causing an actual murder, anyway.
what i think we are concerned about is a larger issue. a foggy civic attitude in which everything from petty vandalisms to the slaying of an officer elicits yawns rather than outrage.
October 5th, 2005 at 2:38 am
Bull. I believe you are wrong, jummy. This game will not be consumed primarily by white kids. You are wrong about that. In America at least, white MEN 18-36 are the overwhelming primary consumers and players of these types of video games. It’s interesting that you feel that “race is not relevent to this stand” I believe probably one of the reasons this video game scares you is because you are a white man, yummy. Probably another is that you are not a consumer of video games. This makes it easier for you to relate video games to what you believe is a “creeping epidemic of nihilism”… Lighten up, jummy! You don’t understand why someone (white, black or hispanic) would get enjoyment from killing cops in a video game so that is why it scares you? Anyway, no video game should elicit outrage in a reasonable and educated human being no matter how offensive they may feel it is to them. They are freaking video games for god’s sake! Find something of much more relevance to becaome outraged about besides some video game. Believe me, there are a lot more serious things out there to get your panties in a bunch over.
October 5th, 2005 at 7:48 am
ben, i say kids because its appropriate. i am familiar with the 18-35 demographic and i think we can all agree that age doesn’t correspond to maturity. you, for instance, i’m sure must be in your early to mid 20’s. would any reasonable person characterize you as an adult? of course not.
“You don’t understand why someone (white, black or hispanic) would get enjoyment from killing cops in a video game…”
i’ll chance a guess. is it for lack of female companionship?
and obviously from what you’ve written, you derive a semi-sexual thrill from putting on virtual blackface and virtually committing crime. you seem to think a “want” to kill cops defines blackness.
the racism in this isn’t overt, of course. since all components in it make up a network of symbols you don’t seem to be aware of; black criminals = superego, cops = your dad, who in turn symbolzes fears of your own mediocrity.
you, i’m willing to guess, are far more surface-reactive. you think your fantasies about killing cops are justified because of that time an officer made you pour your beer out. damn the man! you would’ve started another watts riot after that episode, but the oppressed at the skate park had grown apathetic. LOL!
finally, i think you should lighten up ben. you’re getting over-exersized in a discussion you don’t really have an invitation for or a propper place in. adults are talking over here.
October 5th, 2005 at 2:21 pm
Sorry, jummy. Men between the ages of 18-35 are not kids. They are adults. Maturity has nothing to do with it. I have nothing against thae cops that made me pour out my beers 20 years ago. Hell, I laugh at the fact that I am doing that now to minors who I catch using alcohol.(life is strange) I have every right to engage in this discussion. I am a police officer so I thought I would share my thoughts about the subject since I have an opinion about it. I believe opinions of others scare you, jummy.. so your first reaction is to assume they are younger than you and have no business being where you are. Your type lives a closeted lifestyle and you accuse me of not having female companionship? Wrong again, Dr. Phil! I encounter and sometimes arrest wise-ass “mature” men like yourself everyday. Why do things as harmless as video games scare you? Because most of your fears are baseless and made up to rationalize your beliefs when it comes to banning types of media. Maybe if your job required you to strap on a bullet-proof vest (in 90 degree heat) and have a weapon at your side before you went to work everyday you would realize that being afraid of video games is just a waste of time. “creeping epidemic of nihilism” I’m still cracking up about that one! Put down the Friedrich Nietzche, walk outside, take a deep breath, stop being scared of what you don’t understand and accept reality, jummy.
