Super Bowl, God and Country
Bottom Line Up Front: The God and Victory pendulums are swinging back to the right.
Tired of secularists and peaceniks dampening the American spirit? Duck! The pendulum is swinging back this way, if only for a while.
First, at last night’s Super Bowl XLI, the third most watched TV program in history with 93.2 millions viewers, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17. Colts coach Tony Dungy made history as the first black coach ever to win the Super Bowl; runner up coach for the Bears, Lovie Smith, is also black. More importantly, according to the coaches, they’re Christians. Winning coach Dungy said:
“I’ll tell you what. I’m proud to be representing African-American coaches, to be the first African-American to win this. It means an awful lot to our country. But again, more than anything, I’ve said it before, Lovie Smith and I, not only the first two African-Americans, but Christian coaches showing that you can win doing it the Lord’s way. And we’re more proud of that.”
Awesome! It’s great to see men who really have their heads in the game. However, some wire services edited out the Christian references, mentioning only the African-American portion of the quote. Nice.
Earlier this week, Bears’ head coach Smith said:
“My relationship, first, is with Jesus Christ, and he is the center of my life. I try to live a Christian life. I would like for players to know my faith based on what they see on a day-to-day basis.”
“We’re (Dungy and Smith) pro football coaches, but we are also men of faith. A faith that defines who we are. It comforts us in tough times and produces hope in the midst of adversity. It is through our common faith in Jesus Christ that we have individually experienced God’s love and forgiveness.”
If that weren’t enough to make you glad to be an American, a bipartisan resolution repudiating the president’s strategy to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq failed to advance in the U.S. Senate, dealing a serious setback to critics of the war. The tally was 49 to 47, short of the 60 votes necessary to end debate and move toward passage of the non-binding resolution.
Looks like the great Democratic mandate was more of a suggestion last November. Too bad liberals are so afraid of God and victory. This could have been a great start to their week.
