U.S. Offers Katrina Families $2,000 Each
When did we all agree on this?

AP reports: “Dispossessed families of Hurricane Katrina will receive debit cards good for $2,000 to spend on clothing and other immediate needs, the Bush administration announced Wednesday, working to recast a relief effort drawing scant praise from Republicans and scathing criticism from top congressional Democrats.”
With all due respect and sympathy for the victims of Katrina, what the heck is going on?
Private charity is one thing and the donations raised so far have been significant, but handing out taxpayers’ money is another. Goverment shouldn’t be so generous with other people’s money. Especially when it’s handed out selectively.
Afterall, where do you draw the line?
Is every uninsured American who experiences financial loss to expect the same? No way. Besides, government is already deep enough in the charity/welfare business, it shouldn’t add to it. (Debit cards? Are they collecting points for mileage? C’mon)
Oh well. Perhaps this will count towards satisfying the “reparations” lobby, but we doubt it.

Another evil corporation…
“EmigrantDirect, the Internet banking division of Emigrant Savings Bank, is taking the unprecedented step of giving each and every one of their customers in the most affected counties and parishes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, a gift of $1,000 per household.”
Now, that’s charity.
