The President Turns Up the Heat
Stopping at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska, President Bush used the occasion to turn up the heat on Senate Democrats for their doublespeak. Here are some key points from a very good speech:
Let me give you some quotes from three senior Democrat leaders: First, and I quote, “There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons.” Another senior Democrat leader said, “The war against terrorism will not be finished as long as Saddam Hussein is in power.” Here’s another quote from a senior Democrat leader: “Saddam Hussein, in effect, has thumbed his nose at the world community. And I think the President is approaching this in the right fashion.” They spoke the truth then, and they’re speaking politics now.
The Democrats want not just to rewrite history but to rewrite the debate on the most important military confrontation we’ve faced in the past quarter century. In their utopia, they’re hoping that we’ll forget their past statements. In their utopia, they’re hoping that we’ll be distracted enough to let them get back to their ‘good issues’ instead of focusing on who these monsters are and what a huge threat they pose to the world.
They welcome this revisionist history so they can stick their head into the sand and pretend like it’s the 1990’s again when, as John Kerry so clearly said, that “we could go back to when terrorism was just a nuisance.” They also welcome this revisionist history because they don’t want us to notice that they aren’t serious-minded in their approach to global terrorism.
Thankfully, President Bush is turning up the heat on these forked-tongued Democrats by turning their own words against them. I agree with the Powerline guys in saying that the President should repeat this message every couple of days so he can talk past the Agenda Media’s filter. Give ‘em hell, George. (Them = Agenda Media and their MediaCrat allies)
For more than four years, we’ve seen the brutal nature of the terrorists. They’ve targeted the innocent in many countries, people from all walks of life. In Casablanca, they killed diners enjoying their evening meal. In Bali, they killed tourists who were on a holiday. In Beslan, they killed Russian school children. They’ve murdered workers in Riyadh, commuters in Madrid, and hotel guests in Jakarta, and guests at a wedding celebration in Amman, Jordan. They kill Iraqi children in Baghdad.
Thankfully, the President is reminding the American people of the evil nature of the terrorists by reminding them of the killings in Casablanca, Bali, Beslan, Riyadh, Madrid, Jakarta and Amman. These are the actions of evil people, not insane fanatics. These are the actions of our mortal enemies.
There’s only one acceptable outcome: the death of the last jihadist. That won’t happen this decade but it’s the only acceptable policy and outcome if we want to give the next generation a better world. Anything less is unacceptable.
Thanks to our men and women in uniform, the Iraqi and Afghan people are building democracies, and as they do so, they inspire people across the broader Middle East. And freedom’s advance has only just begun. In our lifetime, we’ve seen the power of freedom to conquer evil, and take root in previously unfamiliar soil. Freedom is the mightiest force of history, because the desire for liberty is embedded in the soul of every man, woman, and child on the face of this earth.
Liberty’s march indeed has just begun. Witness it in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Ukraine in this decade. Witness it in the liberation of the former Soviet bloc countries in the 1990’s. Its appeal is growing wherever people can see its affects, whether it’s in the smiles of ink-stained fingers or the smile of an Afghan woman who cast the first vote in Afghanistan’s history.
Personally, this is the part of the President’s speeches that I love the most because the thought of freedom spreading is such an uplifting message. That idealism is what all Americans relate to and are inspired by.
When President Bush talks about this subject, he’s at his most appealing because he speaks with a conviction that’s visceral, meaty and substantive.
Let’s hope he keeps making this appeal in future speeches. If he does, he’ll quickly regain the upper hand on the “Forked Tongue Wing” of the Democratic Party while giving the American people a reason to like him and rally to him.
SIDENOTE: Peter Hoekstra, House Intelligence Committee Chairman, had a great point on Special Report last night when he said that any congressman that relied solely on what President Bush told them “didn’t do the due dilligence their constituents expect.” Mr. Hoekstra, I couldn’t agree more. I hope you continue speaking out on this issue. Your’s is a refreshing, welcome voice.
