Give War a Chance
That’s essentially what Christopher Shays’ op-ed is about. I’ve disagreed with Rep. Shays a number of times, most noticeably for his participation in getting BCRA enacted into law. I love this op-ed, though, because this line jumped out at me:
I have traveled to Iraq 11 times since 2003 and have met remarkable people. When I ask them what their biggest fear is, it is not the violence. It is “that you will leave us.”
This statement shouldn’t be seen as another ‘Bush puppet’ spouting the party line. Rep. Shays has been as independant a voice as any in Washington other than Lincoln Chaffee and Chuckie Hagel. Giving that quote additional credibility is that it isn’t the first time we’ve heard it. Far from it. Plus, this isn’t coming from someone who’s taken cheapshots at the President from the comfort of his Hyannisport bunker. This comes from someone who’s been there almost a dozen times in the past 3 years.
To those who say that “Stay the course isn’t a plan”, I offer that quote that it isn’t just a plan; it’s the best plan. If we want friends in that part of the world, we can’t back out now because (a) this would be seen as a betrayal by the Iraqis just when they’re moving in the right direction and (b) because we can’t abandon people who share our goal of a flourishing democracy instead of being ruled by a thug.
It would be morally reprehensible to walk away from a proud people that have shown the world that much courage, grit and determination.
