Ahmadinejad: “Israel a Threat”

Iran’s hardline President Ahmadinejad is sounding the anti-Zionist alarm again. Here’s what the AP wrote about it:

The president of Iran again lashed out at Israel on Friday and said it was “heading toward annihilation,” just days after Tehran raised fears about its nuclear activities by saying it successfully enriched uranium for the first time. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a “permanent threat” to the Middle East that will “soon” be liberated. He also appeared to again question whether the Holocaust really happened. “Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation,” Ahmadinejad said at the opening of a conference in support of the Palestinians. “The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm.”

Ahmadinejad is making it easy to justify an attack on Iran. His anti-Israeli rhetoric and his announcement that they’d just enriched uranium make the issue of intelligence reports of minor importance. It’s the threats that will be used to justify airstrikes against Iran.

Here’s what Reuters said:

Iran’s president said on Friday that the existence of the “Zionist regime”, Iran’s term for Israel, was a threat to the Islamic world, days after declaring Iran had become a nuclear power by enriching uranium. But the tone of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to a conference on the Palestinian issue was slightly more moderate than fiery rhetoric last year, when Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted him as telling a conference: “Israel must be wiped off the map. The existence of the Zionist regime is tantamount to an imposition of an unending and unrestrained threat so that none of the nations and Islamic countries of the region and beyond can feel secure from its threat,” Ahmadinejad said on Friday.

Talk about an idiot. He expects us to think of Israel, which is about 70 miles wide and 500 miles long, is “an unending and unrestrained threat so that none of the nations and Islamic countries of the region…” Israel, at 22,330 sq. km, isn’t even a fourth of the size of Jordan at 92,300 sq km. Only Lebanon is smaller than Israel at 10,400 sq km.

If Ahmadinejad thinks that Israel is a region-wide threat, that doesn’t say much for the Arab’s militaries, does it? Truthfully, though, he doesn’t believe that. He’s just trying to stir up the Arab world.

The bottom line is that this will just give us all the justification we’ll need for when we hit Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
