One of the interesting things about those who complain about Iraqi's not 'being able to get the job done' is that they don't like to address the brass tacks of what it takes to get a competent Army up and running. I have yet to hear one of them address this, particularly getting a capable NCO Corps in place. The US took a minimum of 5 years after Viet Nam to do that and definitively had done it in 17 years. So, why are we expecting *more* from a brand NEW Army than we did from ours?

And as folks come to criticize the current strategy, not a one of them offers a way forward that actually addresses those things to make a plan for stability in Iraq. To do that requires recognizing where to sources of instability lay and that the pieces to a solution are in easy reach from Iraq.

Holy Cow! Thanks for pointing that out. I had Iran on my mind, between Iraq and Afghanistan.

Now I know someone reads the entire article!

Great post! One small quibble: Iraq is sandwiched between Iran and Syria, not Iran and Afghanistan.

Timeline for withdrawal = timeline for defeat...

Lemme lay it out for you all simple-like and barney-style:

Setting a timeline for withdrawl from Iraq simply lets the insurgents know how much longer they have to hold out!...

Stay and Pray is better than Cut and Run.

This war is 75% won. The only thing giving the terrorists, mostly backed by Iran or al-Qaeda, hope is the continual undeserved criticism by the Murthas of America. This war would have been under control a year or more ago if the Dems had stopped giving our enemies hope.

Before al-Zarqawi was killed, al-Qaeda claimed they were losing in confiscated documents/letters from al-Qaeda leaders, including al-Zarqawi. Now they claim they are winning, although they aren't and they know it, because they received a shot in the arm on election night to continue their path of destruction. Targeting soldiers and Iraqi civilians is the way to win because limp wristed America will only take so much.

The stupid thing is that soldiers are willing to win the war for us but the ignoramous Dems keep interferring. It's really a shame.

By the way, how do YOU justify the tragic repurcussions of a withdrawl? How do YOU justify the Democratic position? How do YOU justify a Middle East that will fall apart if we leave? How is that the answer?

Not knowing what to do when surprised by a bright light, the deer stood motionless in the middle of the road until run over by a truck.

The Stay-and-Pray strategy you so doggedly support offers no hope for a successful conclusion. Indeed, in your long treatise you offer no vision of the future following your strategy. The best we can hope for with Stay-and-Pray is that things won't get worse, but that is highly unlikely.

It is instinctive when faced with a conundrum to stand transfixed, unable to decide what to do next. It is instinct; it is also foolish.
