Why are Jews liberals?

In the presidential election, Barack Obama won 78% of the Jewish vote.

In a new book by Norman Podhoretz, he explores the question: Why are Jews liberal? Wall Street Journal has the story.

The symptoms are reflexive behavior in support of the left, and the prognosis isn’t encouraging.

With Obama’s aggressive actions to tax-and-spend, destroy the private U.S. health care industry (in order to make it government-run and as efficient as social security and other unsuccessful social programs), while raising the federal deficit to unprecedented levels, and doing all this within the first six months of taking office — how many American Jews have voter’s remorse?

Obama just put Israel “on the chopping block,” said former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton.

Judging by my recent experiences with professional friends (of the liberal bent) who seem to be completely oblivious to the actual goings-on in the country…

…I would imagine that liberal Jews are just as clueless. (Due to their liberal-ness.)

On the other hand, I have several conservative Jewish friends who are as mystified as I regarding their self-destructive people.

Theres a similar syndrome among some old line Catholics, Irish and Italian, who cant quite pull themselves away from the party of Harry Truman and their grand dads.

But Harry Truman is dead, and so is the Democratic party. It died on Nov 22 , 1963.

They are liberal for the same reason others are liberal. It’s not to actually help those in need, it’s to create an alternate reality in which theoretical solutions to real problems can be tried, but the results of such “solutions” don’t matter.

What does matter is that, in the alternate reality created in one’s own mind, a solution was presented, and that increases one’s own self-worth.

And that, boys and girls, is far more valuable than any real solution to any real problem in a real world.

As Thomas Sowell has often noted, the egocentrism of a liberal knows no bounds.

Yeah, its somehow satisfying to be a “liberal”. You’ve done your part to show empathy, and that you not a cold hearted pragmatist.

Fairness over justice, sympathy over discipline, feelings over reality; as if thats the way to get things done.
