A Vast Leftwing Konspiracy: “Townhouse” and The DailyKost of Doing Business

There’s controversy growing about a leaked email from Kos to a squadron of top-ranked leftwing bloggers. In short, we find suggestions of impropriety in practice, as there may have been some “backroom” dealings, a Tammany Hall-style quid pro quo, whereby Kos’ partner, Jerome Armstrong, allegedly receives “consulting fees” from certain politicians in exchange for endorsement and de facto promotion by the Kos on his blog.

Quite frankly, with all due respect to The New Republic (TNR), this news hardly seems Mento fresh.

Is there any surprise to this story, really? Not to us. But it’s hitting a nerve in some people.

The DailyKos declares: “TNRs defection to the Right is now complete” Another one?

Evidently, because they *gasp* reported on the story. Shame on them. Afterall, they read the group email in which Kos decrees:

“My request to you guys is that you ignore this for now. It would make my life easier if we can confine the story.
. . .

If any of us blog on this right now, we fuel the story. Let’s starve it of oxygen.”

And to think some liberals just won’t follow instructions.

Kos bemoans:

“This is what the once-proud New Republic has evolved into — just another cog of the Vast RIGHT Wing Conspiracy.

If you still hold a subscription to that magazine, it really is time to call it quits. If you see it in a magazine rack, you might as well move it behind the National Review or even NewsMax, since that’s who they want to be associated with these days.
. . .

These smear mongers have tried to drag other people and organizations into their fantasies. Like YearlyKos.
. . .

Think of all the great progressive organizations that joined in to make it happen — People For the American Way, MoveOn, DFA, UNITE-HERE, SEIU, the Rappaports, all of the politicians who attended, and so on. All of them smeared by the Right Wing, sure, that’s what they do. But joined by the New Republic? Not surprising, yet still disappointing.”

Reading this nearly draws tears to our eyes. It’s that amusing.

Alas, poor Yorick. He, too, was a progressive.
