The Ultimate Throwaway Line
As you all know, it pays to read beyond the headlines of any major newspaper. That’s especially true in this article. Here’s the article’s headline:
Cardin In Strong Lead; Schaefer in Jeopardy
It’s the Baltimore Sun’s primary election summary. Most of the article is devoted to reporting the vote totals for the various races for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. It isn’t until the last paragraph of the article that you find the real gold:
This year, the Maryland Democratic Party commissioned a statewide survey of black voters which showed that 44 percent were open to a Steele candidacy.
The thought that Michael Steele, fresh off of getting hip-hop giant Russell Simmons’ endorsement, is facing Ben Cardin, not former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume, could attract that many black votes should scare the daylights out of the Democrats.
