Tentative Deal Struck on Patriot Act
The AP’s David Espo is reporting that Senate Republicans have hammered out a deal to renew the Patriot Act. Here’s the details:
Sen. John Sununu, (R-NH), and three other GOP lawmakers, all of whom joined with Democrats last year to block a long-term extension of the law, arranged a late-afternoon news conference to announce their accord with the administration. White House press secretary Scott McClellan pre-empted them, though, saying the changes “continue to build upon the civil liberties protections that are in place but do so in a way that doesn’t compromise our national security priorities. We’re pleased that this important legislation is moving forward,” he said.
The next logical step is for this legislation to move to the Senate floor for debate. Espo points out that that would put Democrats in a sticky wicked here:
The agreement would put Democrats in a position of having to choose whether to continue to block a final vote on legislation in the face of unanimous support among Republicans and the administration on an issue of national security.
I suspect that enough Red State Democrats will abandon the Democratic leadership and their moonbat base to stop an attempted filibuster. Further, I’d doubt that Reid and CO. would be stupid enough to attempt a filibuster but then again, I’ve been wrong before about how stupid they can be.
