Teachers Refuse To Promote Gay Agenda In The Classroom
The S.F. Chronicle reports: “Five teachers at San Leandro High School have refused to comply with a school district order to display a rainbow-flag poster in their classrooms that reads, “This is a safe place to be who you are,” because they say homosexuality violates their religious beliefs, Principal Amy Furtado said.”
Let the games begin.
“The high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance designed the poster, which includes pink triangles and other symbols of gay pride. In December the school board approved a policy requiring all district teachers to hang the posters in their classrooms.
District officials said the poster is an effort to comply with state laws requiring schools to ensure students’ safety and curb discrimination and harassment. They say that too often teachers do not reprimand students who use derogatory slurs or refer to homosexuality in a negative way.”
Our view: Unless you’re studying it, keep politics out of the classroom. This is an obvious attempt at social engineering; shaping attitudes and opinions about homosexuality. Let kids make up their own minds in the free marketplace of ideas.
Here’s a suggestion: How about a poster that shows the Holy Cross and the Star of David, encouraging kids to pray. Freedom of religion. Any objections? Calling Mr. Newdow.
If schools really care about providing a “safe place,” maybe they should focus on youth gangs and improper actions by teachers. Better yet, focus on teaching them core skills.
Art teacher Tom Laughlin, who is gay and who oversaw the poster’s design by students in the Gay-Straight Alliance, said he was surprised by the level of intolerance for homosexuality that he perceived when he started teaching at the high school five years ago. He said he recognized that it was critical when a student called him a “fag.”
“There was a real need to do this,” he said. “A lot of students didn’t know about gay people in general.”
First, since when did teasing become an offense for censorship? What about being called “fat”? Or “ugly”? Or “stupid”? Are schools and activist laws going to legislate speech according to “standards” set by political correctness? That’s taking the free out of free speech. What happened to “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me?” Toughen up, kids. Stop watching the Real World, and start living in it.
Secondly, what if students “know about gay people in general” (the teacher presumes they don’t) and still object to their lifestyle? For personal reasons. For religious reasons. Free will prevails. Or are schools in the business of forcing opinions while expunging independent thought? Could be.
And it’s “safe” to say, these posters are propoganda.

Yeah, that’s a hoot isn’t it? I’m not sure if they should have done it on religious grounds though. Makes supporting your decision a bit of an uphill battle. Not sure if they could have made an effective stance on a ‘non-PC speech platform though either’. That said, it’d be nice if the schools would have the backing of parents to kick kids out for a day or more if they are disruptive in any way. They sure didn’t put up with much crap when I was in school. I don’t think that’s so much the result of ‘liberalism’ as I think it’s the result of ‘over protective parentism’. ;-)

on a slightly different note. in Ireland (and britian) fag is slang for cigarette. And bum is slang for borrow (or bottom depending on the context)
So if you are over here and someone says “Can I bum a fag”. It is not the same question as in America. It is “can I borrow a cigarette”.
Anyway
If it must be done the sign should include all symbols that kids would identify with . Crosses, stars, cresents, triangles whatever.
Let kids make up their own minds in the free marketplace of ideas.
So if a kid made up their own mind that flying planes into building is a good thing you would have no problem with that?
A certain amount of guidence of childerns minds is needed in society.

I recall phrases like “free marketplace of ideas” and “let the children decide” coming up in various debates about Intelligent Design (nee Creationism). This is also an area where guidance is required, both for children and adults who don’t seem to grasp how science works.

Saint, correct. May free will decide, and let security preside. (Kinda snappy, eh?)
Thankful for the NSA.
In terms of guidance, leave that to the parents. It’s their right.
If you’re worried about mind control, look not to us, but to political correctness.

Don’t start me on political correctness I can’t stand it. I hope we never end up with the christmas/holiday crap over here.

Totally agree. People over here think the stories about intelligent design are totally crazy and people are begining to think America is going to turn into somekind of theorocracy. I don’t think anyone agrees with it over here. The catholic church agrees with evoultion.

Where do you think terrorist get their ideas. It is breed into them. Parents have the right to guide their kids but not bring them up too hate thats abuse.
