Rather out at CBS

What a shame to hear that news. It wasn’t until Rathergate hit that I started blogging. And now the man who made a fool of himself with statements like “If these documents are forgeries, I’d like to break that news” (This coming 2 weeks after Powerline broke the story.) and the unforgettable line where the talk show host asked him if he thought Bill Clinton was an honest man, Rather replied “I believe a man can lie about any number of things and still be an honest man.”

After 44 years, Dan Rather will leave CBS by the end of the month, at the latest, industry sources said Friday. His departure could come as early as next week. Rather, 74, whose contract runs until late November, is working out the final details of his exit agreement, the sources say. Money is not an issue, they say. Among the sticking points: Whether Rather will have access to his archival CBS material.

In other words, it’s all over except the whining, which Rather will surely do.

Anchor of CBS Evening News for a record 24 years until being forced out in March ‘05 by the Memogate scandal, Rather was fighting to stay at the network in some “meaningful” capacity. It was clear that the network wanted him gone.

Maybe he and Mapes can go on the Kos tour, telling their tales of woe to anyone gullible enough to believe anything. The Kos crowd certainly hate Bush enough to believe them.

Dan Rather Reportedly Out At CBS (UPDATED)

I know Dan Rather from the letter he replied to when I reminded him, for the upcoming 20th Anniversary commemmoration of the Fall of Saigon, who it was that stayed behind and covered the story for CBS after it’s entire staff fled in the panic. He said he’d bring this to CBS’ attention, producers etc. That was the last I heard from the guy who “venerates the Ed Murrow tradition”—or any of the others who were congratulating themselves over CBS coverage of that ‘Story of the Decade.’
