Pravda’s Washington Branch

I just spotted a headline from Pravda’s Washington Branch (a.k.a. the AP) that the judge that’ll rule on Representative DeLay’s motion to quash the indictments that have been filed against him. That isn’t what caught my eye most, though. Here’s what did:

DeLay, accused of masterminding a political fundraising scheme that helped put more Republicans in the Texas Legislature and Congress, contends Perkins is too much of a Democrat to give him a fair trial.”

Goodness gracious. Mr. DeLay masterminded a political fundraising plan with the intent of putting more Republicans in the Texas Legislature and Congress. The brashness of this DeLay character. Unthinkable.

Seriously, it’s disappointing that the AP would use the term scheme in this situation. The implication is that he did something illegal or underhanded. Nothing could be further from the truth. What Mr. DeLay did was say boldly, proudly and defiantly that his goal was to defeat Democrats and help Republicans get elected. I’d bet that the average American would read that and say something along the lines like “Well, what else should he have as a goal?” This isn’t worthy of a mention. PERIOD.

Pravda’s Washington Branch. It’s saying things that ought never to be said.
