Pelosi, Traps, and Smears

Pelosi at the PodiumWhile no one’s surprised when Democrats accuse Republicans of smearing respected veterans, it’s another thing when the MSM mischaracterizes facts that are easily discerned. Instead of calling Congressman Duncan Hunter’s (R-CA) resolution a trap, as did Newsweek and the Washington Post this week, a little journalism and common sense might have helped Americans understand the issues better – without the distraction of a cat fight.

Let’s look at both resolutions:

Congressman Murtha’s Resolution demanded that Congress:

  1. Terminate deployment of US forces in Iraq
  2. Redeploy forces at the earliest practicable date
  3. Deploy quick-reaction and over-the-horizon Marine presence
  4. Pursue security and stability in Iraq through diplomacy

The Pentagon has continuously deployed and redeployed US forces, including quick-reaction and over-the-horizon forces, throughout the region. The Bush Administration has also pursued security and stability through diplomacy in Iraq since 2001. As moot as these inclusions were, Murtha might have also demanded that Hawaii be recognized as our 50th state — a good idea but equally unnecessary. The only question left was whether Congress should terminate deployment of US forces in Iraq: Which was precisely what Duncan Hunter proposed. Voting for things that already exist is pointless.

If you’re still confused let me propose the following:

  1. Create three branches of federal government
  2. Establish voting rights for women
  3. Create a Department of Defense
  4. Legalize crack

As good as three of these ideas are, it’s proper to exclude them and take a quick vote on the crack legalization. No one needs my permission as Newsweek insinuates.

Congresswoman Pelosi’s “traps and smears” stemmed not from the legitimate vote, but from the MSM’s peevish misrepresentation of Congressman Murtha’s stunt. And while I don’t think he’s a coward, I’m offended by Democrats playing politics with troops that include my son.

It’s time that the MSM leave their bias with politicians and get back to reporting the news.
