Pelosi on Military Commissions Signing

The seemingly omniscient Nancy Pelosi weighed in on the signing of the military commissions bill that President Bush signed Tuesday morning with this press release:

“Democrats voted overwhelmingly to go to war in Afghanistan so that those responsible for the 9/11 attacks would be brought to justice. More than five years later, because of the failure of the Bush Administration to devise a legal process that could withstand the scrutiny of the Supreme Court, not a single person who planned the attacks has been tried and convicted.
“That record of failure is unlikely to be improved by the military commissions bill President Bush signed today. Legal challenges to the bill may result in convictions being overturned, punishments being set aside, and justice being further delayed. In addition, because the bill allows the president to interpret the Geneva Conventions through executive order, it invites other countries to do the same, thereby weakening the international legal standards that have protected our troops for decades.
“Democrats want terrorists who kill Americans tried, convicted and punished through a constitutionally sound process that will be upheld on appeal. That goal will not be achieved by the bill President Bush signed into law today.”

As usual, Ms. Pelosi’s timing couldn’t be worse to complain about the courts handling of the GWOT. It’s hard to argue that the courts are an efficient way to prosecute terrorists, especially considering the fact that a Clinton judge sentenced Lynne Stewart, whom most Americans would describe as a terrorist, to 28 months in prison after passing messages from the Blind Sheikh to Egyptian terrorists.

Frankly, I don’t care that “more than five years later”, “not a single person who planned the attacks has been tried and convicted.” As long as they aren’t free to plan other terrorist attacks is fine with me.

Ms. Pelosi would have people believe that terrorists would be set free if the SCOTUS decided that these commissions didn’t pass Constitutional muster. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s also noteworthy that the Supreme Court ruling merely said that the Executive Branch couldn’t unilaterally create the military tribunals. In fact, there’s nothing in their ruling that says that these prisoners have to be tried.

When Ms. Pelosi says “Legal challenges to the bill may result in convictions being overturned, punishments being set aside, and justice being further delayed”, the inference is that these terrorists might be set free. Nothing’s further from the truth. They’d return to Gitmo where they’d be held until the GWOT is finished.

Ms. Pelosi’s statement also tells you that the ACLU is planning on challenging this law soon. What a lovely thought that is; if congressional Democrats don’t sabotage the bill, the ACLU will contest it before a Supreme Court that’s got too many idiot liberals on it.

Is it any wonder why the average person thinks that moonbat liberals don’t take fighting the GWOT seriously?
