Obama Strikes Out at Bush’s Energy Policy

In surprising news, Barack Obama has again lashed out at President Bush on an issue. It’s surprising in the sense that it’s amazing he knows anything about President Bush’s energy policy. Here’s a glimpse at his diatribe:

“Saying that America is addicted to oil without following a real plan for energy independence is like admitting alcoholism and then skipping out on the 12-step program,” the Illinois Democrat said. He referred to one of the principal themes of President Bush’s State of the Union address Jan. 31. “It’s not enough to identify the challenge. We have to meet it,” Obama said in remarks prepared for the annual luncheon of The Associated Press, held on the opening day of the Newspaper Association of America’s convention.

Mr. Obama is playing coy because he knows that the President has proposed further energy policy initiatives since then. He’s just too tempted to blast away at President Bush, regardless of facts. I think it’s a Democratic disease known as BDS. By the way, this isn’t the same affliction that’s infected Al Gore. His is a unique affliction, known only to him.

It might be wise for Democrats to keep quiet on the energy issue until they’re willing to offer true energy reforms that actually work. That won’t stop them, of course. They won’t advocate increasing reliance on nuclear energy. (By the way, President Bush’s treaty with India will guide India towards using nuclear power, thereby reducing oil consumption longterm.) They won’t advocate the tax cuts for people to develop propane-powered vehicles like President Bush has advocated.

The bottom line is that Sen. Obama’s diatribe is just a cheapshot that’s devoid of facts and persuasion.

Great post. Bush has released several “energy policies” that work to get us away from oil…even in his first term he increased funding for alternative energy research.

  2. El Grande Says:

Agreed, it’s a cheapshot. What did the Dems do for 8 years of Clinton’s administration that advanced any real alternatives to foreign oil?

Leaving out nuclear power development here at home is a big mistake. It’s by far the most efficient form of energy, has the smallest footprint (even accounting for the waste) and new technology has made it safer and cleaner than ever.

But, just like with ANWR or off-shore drilling, the enviros and the Dems refuse to consider this reasonable source of energy in favor of the political gains of bashing Bush.

  3. oldhats Says:

I couldn’t agree more. Let’s hear a proactive plan instead of knee-jerk Bush bashing. And you’re right, ElGrande, we need to be talking a lot more about nuclear energy and about opening up ANWR, the Outer Continental Shelf and the Rockies…

I wish our elected officials would stop playing the blame game and start working together so they can actually accomplish something. Our energy problems aren’t going to go away by themselves. Bush’s energy policies need to be taken seriously. We need to open up our resources close to home (i.e. ANWR) and start incorporating alternative energy sources such as Nuclear power - solar power - wind power and so on before it is too late.

  5. Heir to TR Says:

We are never going to have a coherent energy policy or a reduction in reliance on foreign sources of energy until the pols stop listening to the whiners who say “Not in my Backyard,” and really mean anywhere in the 50 states. We need to drill, build refining capacity, add to nuclear generation, and (yes, Ted K) build windfarms off the Massachusetts coast.
