No Filibuster Showdown, Democrats Happy
AP reports: “In a dramatic reach across party lines, Senate centrists sealed a compromise Monday night that cleared the way for confirmation of many of President Bush’s stalled judicial nominees, left others in limbo and preserved venerable filibuster rules.”
The devil is in the details. We shall remain skeptical. Especially since leading Democrats appear far too pleased.
“We have lifted ourselves above politics,” agreed Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W. Va
The former Clansman is sounding very altruistic. Reason alone to be cautious. But the best comes from Reid:
“Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada seemed more receptive  although he hastened to say he remains opposed to some of the nominees who will now likely take seats on federal appeals courts.”“Checks and balances have been protected. The integrity of the Supreme Court has been protected from the undue influence of the vocal, radical right wing,” Reid said.
Yup. That’s the kind of rhetoric we’d expect.
UPDATE: Malkin has more.
Bill Quick doesn’t mince words about the Republican buckle: “I Was Just Going To Call Them Cowardly Whores and Be Done With It” Just tellin’ it like it is.
Patterico is stompin’ mad, and breaks it down for us.
