At my university, students could place out of the English requirement by achieving a passing grade on a written essay.

The student could choose from among 5 essay subjects, and I chose "nuclear disarmament." I wrote about how foolish it would be for the United States to consider unilateral disarmament and how we could not trust the Soviet Union to keep their end of any bargain. I did not pass the writing assignment.

I exercised my right to get feedback from the grader on areas for improvement on my writing skills. I didn't have to enter his office, though, to know exactly why I failed. He had a LIFE-SIZED PORTRAIT of Vladmir Lenin on his door.

The second time I wrote the essay, I chose the least politically controversial topic. It wasn't easy because 4 out of the 5 were unavoidably political. I wrote about the impact of television on education; I easily achieved a passing score.

Apparently, to a leftist English professor, it's more desirable to understand communism than commas.

Sadly about the only faculties that seem unaffected by such intellectual intolerance, idiocy and egotism, are the engineering and natural sciences, where as of yet anyway, the laws of physics have not been politicized.

I have two children in college, one graduating in 2 days and one a sophomore. My oldest attends Adams State College, a mostly teacher college and has seen some professors exhibit the behavior you note, mostly in the social sciences (her major) area. My son attended a larger school Univ. of Norther Colorado, also a teacher college. He is much more blunt about his political ideology than my daughter but didn't really notice any issues. I believe that is because he is studying history and geography. Sadly I see the type of behavior you describe in some of the Elementary and Jr. High teachers and have spoken out about it with little effect.
