Murtha’s Wrong (Again)
In his most recent AP article, Tom Raum says that President Bush’s approval ratings have improved but experts disagree why. Later in the article, Raum quotes John Murtha’s ‘response’ to the President’s speech. To say that Murtha isn’t right is understatement.
“There’s no way we can win a war when you’ve lost not only the hearts and minds of the people (of Iraq), when you become the enemy,” Rep. John Murtha, (D-PA), said.
It’s interesting that polling from Iraq tells the opposite story. According to an ABC poll released yesterday, only 26% of respondents want coalition troops to “leave now.” An additional 10% say that the withdrawal of foreign troops in the next year is a “high priority.” It appears that Mr. Murtha’s speaking of things he doesn’t know the first thing about again.
What’s worse is that he hasn’t offered a single tidbit of proof supporting his claims. He’s made allegations as to why he’s right but allegations and hunches aren’t proof. He’d do well to take a trip to Iraq and find out firsthand what’s happening there so he could make factual statements instead of making wild allegations.
Murtha is a longtime hawk on military matters who has become the point man for a troop pullout.
Raum is either covering up Murtha’s history or he’s the laziest journalist in the business. Murtha’s been advocating leaving Iraq for well over a year, saying that we couldn’t win Iraqis hearts and minds even then. Murtha’s also the guy that told Bill Clinton that we couldn’t win in Somalia and that we should leave. Imagine Murtha saying that the World’s only superpower couldn’t win militarily in Somalia. If that isn’t the most outlandish thing I’ve ever heard, then it’s close to the top. If that’s Raum’s idea of a hawk, I don’t want to see his notion of a dove.
In the final review, Raum and Murtha embarassed themselves; Raum for ‘reporting’ such questionable information, Murtha for speaking without firsthand information of the Iraqi situation.
