Moonbat Voters: Only In San Francisco
While Californians are given the opportunity to vote for critical reforms of state government, San Francisco serves up a predictable roster of social spending and a couple surprises.
AP reports: “Voters here were to consider Tuesday whether to reinforce San Francisco’s ultraliberal image with a pair of ballot measures that seek to ban handguns and oust military recruiters from public high school and college campuses.”
Proposition H is an ordinance that would ban the manufacture, distribution, sale and transfer of firearms and ammunition within San Francisco.
Proposition H also would prohibit San Francisco residents from possessing handguns within San Francisco. An exception would allow residents to possess handguns if it is required for specific professional purposes. For example, San Francisco residents who are security guards, peace officers or active members of the U.S. armed forces would be permitted to possess handguns.
What about the 2nd Amendment? Silly rabbit, San Francisco lives by its own rules, devoid of logic and detached from reality.

Accordingly, only criminals who will buy their guns on the street illegally will be able to bear arms. That’s just ridiculous.
And that’s probably why even the Police Officers Association has declared their opposition to the proposition. They write:
“When we disarm honest, law-abiding citizens, we contribute to empowering criminals and endangering society-at-large. The San Francisco Police Officers Association supports the right of our members (active and retired), neighbors, and law-abiding citizens in this city to choose reasonable means of self-defense while in their homes or businesses. We oppose Proposition H, the S.F. Gun Ban Initiative.”
Exactly.
NRO’s John R. Lott Jr. says, “Now we’re getting somewhere.”
Jeff Levinger asserts, “Supporters of Proposition H make six assumptions, all false.” He breaks it down for us.
According to the S.F. Chronicle:
“It clearly will be thrown out,” said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom on Friday, adding that he planned to vote for the measure anyway to show his opposition to the proliferation of handguns. “It’s so overtly pre-empted. I’m having a difficult time with it, and that’s my one caveat. … It’s really a public opinion poll at the end of the day.”
At taxpayer expense.
UPDATE (11/9)
Neil Boortz comments:
WHO WERE YESTERDAY’S REAL IDIOTS AT THE POLLS?
The voters of San Francisco, that’s who. By a 58% to 42% margin they voted to make the ownership of a handgun illegal in San Francisco, and to require that every resident of San Francisco who owns a handgun to turn it in to the government by April 1st. April 1st, by the way, is more commonly known as “April Fool’s Day.” Even voters in San Francisco should be bright enough to figure out that law-abiding citizens will be the ones to turn over their guns, while the lawless, the criminal element, will not. The number of guns in the hands of law abiding citizens will go down. The number of guns in the hands of criminals will not.
It is particularly amazing that 58% of the San Francisco voters would support this foolish measure after New Orleans. San Francisco faces the prospect of a natural disaster far worse than Katrina. Do the people of San Francisco think that the criminal element will just stay home and behave after the earthquake hits? There will be no violence? No looting? After the experience of the victims of the lawless in New Orleans it is hard to believe that any logical group of Americans would voluntarily disarm. But … I did say logical, didn’t I?

Prop. I: No Military Recruiters in Public Schools
Proposition I is a declaration of policy that the people of San Francisco oppose the federal government’s use of public schools to recruit students for service in the military.
Proposition I is also a declaration that San Francisco should consider funding scholarships for higher education and job training that could provide an alternative to military service.
We already knew that San Francisco is hostile to the military, but this is outrageous.
UPDATE: (11/9)
JunkyardBlog declares it a “San Fransecession”
Furthermore, how is the City, with its own financial hardships, going to fund scholarships and job training? Higher taxes. Of course.
Opposing the legislation, the Examiner reports: “It’s hard to understand why Proposition I is on the ballot. Even if passed, it would have no direct practical effect on anything.”
But it’s the thought that counts, right?
Shameful.

This handgun ban should be considered a good thing to every conservative who does not live in San Fransisco. The theory that denying law abiding citizens the right to own guns will lower crime has been on the liberal agenda for years. What better way to test out the theory than to do it in a single town. I believe it will increase crime, or at best have no effect, but it needs to be tested, if only to make sure the second ammendment is not further eroded for all Americans.
Furthermore, I wish some town would legalize narcotics, so we can see what effect it has. My opinion on this matter is not the conservative one (I think it would give tax money to the government instead of criminals, and not raise drug use appreciably), but it would be nice to KNOW instead of have to opine.

Is los Angeles next? On the radical Socialism scale LA is only slightly below San francisco so residents here should be concerned. LA has already banned the sale of ammunition throughout city, and the city council has repeatedly considered banning handguns. Consider this: there are over 400 well-armed gangs within LA city limits. 20% of LA economy is underground, black market and untaxed, including illegal cash only weapons smuggling and transfers. Police here regularly bust criminal weapons stashes. During Rodney King riots korean storeowners guarded koreatown with shotguns. No storeowner in LA would operate a business without keeping a handgun handy:the LAPD is outnumbered and outgunned on the mean LA streets. LA is prone to riots, which means every citizen for him/herself when the next riot occurs. To pass a handgun ban here would be to simply surrender to the lawless criminal gang elements. The PC-totalitarian anti-gun moonbats would have a hell of a fight to take away the second amendment rights of citizens and business owners in LA.

[...] NOTE: For the reading impaired, Bill O’Reilly is NOT (in no way) suggesting or recommending that anyone “blow up” Coit Tower. However, based on San Francisco’s insistence to alienate itself from the rest of America — legalizing homosexual marriages (with the Mayor himself presiding), promoting public S&M exhibitionism, harboring left-wing extremists, legalizing marijuana, holding a defiant middle-finger up to the U.S. military, banning legal gun ownership and recruiting for our armed forces — O’Reilly is simply pointing out that, given the City’s disrespect for homeland security (let alone personal security), “Baghdad by the Bay” should be the last place deserving of defense. San Francisco can use its liberal arrogance to fend for itself. [...]

ODD HOW the Special City, which prides itself on tolerance and chants incessantly about choice, can be so, well, intolerant. Witness the November election in which 58 percent of city voters elected to ban the sale of firearms in EssEff and to outlaw handgun ownership for citizens. It takes a special city to make the National Rifle Association look like the good guys. . . . [...]
