Maureen Dowd: Hillary Clinton ‘Not Angry Enough’
Yesterday, when I wrote about Arianna Huffington imploring Democrats to fight harder against the NSA terrorist surveillance program, I thought I’d seen the last of the totally hair-brained articles. Sadly, I was wrong. My proof: Mo Dowd’s firebreathing diatribe in the NY Times. Here’s a scary glimpse into Ms. Dowd’s enraged mind:
“Hillary’s problem isn’t that she’s angry,” insists Dowd in her Tuesday column. “It’s that she’s not angry enough.” The tart-tongued Timeswoman complains: “From Iraq to Katrina and the assault on the Constitution, from Schiavo to Alito and N.S.A. snooping to Congressional corruption, Hillary has failed to lead in voicing her outrage.”
She’s actually got a point in that diatribe, namely that Hillary’s been silent about a wide range of issues, choosing to not shout down everything that Bush says. Her silence has been noticed all across the blogosphere.
That said, I’ll just recommend that Mrs. Clinton accept Ms. Dowd’s suggestion. Mrs. Clinton, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get more shrill. No sense waiting until 2007. Start now and let everyone know the real Hillary.
Chatting with radioman Don Imus Tuesday morning, Dowd said Mrs. Clinton’s leadership meltdown may cost her the 2008 presidential nomination. “It’s just interesting what’s happening in the Democratic Party in the last few weeks,” she declared. “I think people are realizing that she’s not the inevitable candidate.” Democrats are starting to fear “that it would be kind of a lemming situation if they just go with her,” Dowd said.
And while GOP claims that Hillary is too angry are unfair, the Times scribe acknowledged they have her boxed in. “Republicans are doing this really blatantly misogynistic thing and painting her as ‘Angry Woman’ because then that puts her in a box,” Dowd told Imus. “Because if she criticizes [Bush] she’s a shrew, you know. And if she doesn’t she’s timid and girlie.”
It appears right now that Mrs. Clinton isn’t “the inevitable candidate” but I think that’s meaningless. That’ll change when she starts raising money by the bucketloads and Al Gore, John Kerry and others are left in her dust.
Dowd shows her ignorance when says that Republicans are “painting her as ‘Angry Woman’. They’re merely pointing out the truth about Hillary. This falls into the category of Democrats accusing Republicans of dirty campaigning, which we know is defined as Republicans using Democrats’ words against them.
UPDATE: I swear that you can’t write this stuff. The day after Mo Dowd calls for Mrs. Clinton to be more vocal, the Hillary throws a hissy fit. Check this out:
Clinton said a convention of United Auto Workers that Democrats should not be afraid to question Bush’s handling of the war. “I take a back seat to nobody when it comes to fighting terrorism and standing up for national homeland security,” she said. Referring to fugitive al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, Clinton said, “You cannot explain to me why we have not captured or killed the tallest man in Afghanistan.” She added, “Since when has it been part of American patriotism to keep our mouths shut?”
Mrs. Clinton, since when is it patriotic to open your mouth with the sole purpose of criticizing the President in wartime?
Mrs. Clinton, you may not think this but Democrats, including you, take a back seat to most anyone when it comes to fighting terrorism. You and your fellow Democrats have offered nothing but criticism on the war on terrorism or the war in Iraq. By the way, don’t throw your voting record for additional funding of the war in Iraq. That’s done purely for political purposes. After each of those votes, you’ve distanced yourself from the policies while not offering any alternative policies.
It would serve Mrs. Clinton well if she actually said something positive. In other words, it’d be nice to hear something from her other than hate-filled diatribes.

[...] UPDATE II California Conservative makes the very good point that maybe Hillary could just say something positive. For once. [...]

Hillary was keeping quiet so as not to alienate the moderates and independents. Her game is to try to play real nicey nice with upstate moderates and conservatives, in an effort to try to translate that nationwide. She has to spend a lot of time upstate to keep convincing us that she’s not a monster, to limited success. But at least Hillary is aware that there is a whole other viewpoint out here in NY, unlike Dowd, who can only see and understand the rabid far left. The Hillary puppet: RANT…. oops, approval ratings upstate just slipped…. mark calendar 42 days out to schedule next rant to occur after my tour of upstate to hand out pork which will smooth over previous rant… Dowd’s column just happened to coincide following a Hillary appearance upstate.

Keep harping about Hillary. Spend all your money, time and effort railing against her wind. But I guarantee she will not be the candidate in 2008. Check with Molly Ivins.

Agree with previous poster. Hillary will not be a candidate. At the very least, she’s stirring the pot, focusing on issues where the Democrats perceive there to be a failure of the current administration. If she were interested in the presidency, it’s unlikely she’d be so rancorous, knowing how much she’d need swing voters. She’s basically trying establish a popular sense of dissatisfaction with the Republicans amongst said voters. I doubt it but, more nefariously, they could actually be using her to get you to focus your attention on her while they are off doing something else that blind sides you. Don’t be so absorbed with one enemy that it blinds you to all the rest.

Anyone thinking that Hillary isn’t running is foolish. She’s been working hard to establish her moderate credentials since she arrive in the Senate. She’s still saying all the nutty things that the moonbat base wants to hear.
I’ll be even more straightforward: I’d bet the proverbial ranch on her running and not lose a split-second of sleep after making that bet.
