S.F. Leather Pride: Nothin’ A Whip and Studded-Collar Can’t Fix

Folsom Street Fair 2005Not everyone is protesting the war.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports: “You don’t need to be on a leash to enjoy this weekend’s Folsom Street Fair, a fantasy-feeding festival that will have the streets of SoMa laden with leather-clad lads and ladies. It’s the only place you can feel comfortable gawking at full-fledged, in-your-face PDA, whips and chains and all. Plus, walking tours celebrate all things leather.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

We don’t need to be reminded that San Francisco’s unique culture welcomes all walks of life, but it sure is fun to watch. At the Folsom Street Fair, the viewing is unbeatable.

On Sunday, thousands will break out the leather, whips and chains and hit the streets of SoMa to show you a spanking good time. This part-naughty, part-nice event — which features hordes of leather-clad slaves and masters expressing themselves in the name of charity — attracts about 400,000 people and is right behind the SF Pride Parade in size. The beautiful fetish freaks and onlookers will dance, eat and drink all day long at this wild street party. Plus, spanking booths will line the streets.”

Bring the kids.

No signs or historical markers identify places like the original Stud bar or the former Club Baths San Francisco, a famous bath house that now is an Episcopal homeless shelter.”

“While the Castro was the political center of gay San Francisco, Folsom Street was the sex center, according to anthropologist Gayle Rubin, who has researched and written about the leather community in the 1970s. It had more gay bath houses and sex clubs than any other San Francisco neighborhood. It was one of the “most extensively and densely occupied leather neighborhoods in the world,” Rubin wrote in “In Changing Times,” a collection of essays about gays and lesbians and AIDS.”

Only in San Francisco…

[...] NOTE: For the reading impaired, Bill O’Reilly is NOT (in no way) suggesting or recommending that anyone “blow up” Coit Tower. However, based on San Francisco’s insistence to alienate itself from the rest of America — legalizing homosexual marriages (with the Mayor himself presiding), promoting public S&M exhibitionism, harboring left-wing extremists, holding a defiant middle-finger up to our military, banning legal gun ownership and recruiting for our armed forces — O’Reilly is simply pointing out that, given the City’s disrespect for homeland security (let alone personal security), “Baghdad by the Bay” should be the last place deserving of defense. San Francisco can use its liberal arrogance to fend for itself. [...]
