But today, in the 21st century, most of the immigrants who come to America seem to have a completely different attitude. Over the last 15 years or so, an unforgivable number of immigrants have disrespectfully taken advantage of our society and our government in many ways. For example, consider all the pregnant women that have illegally crossed the U.S. border from Mexico, to give birth AND automatic citizenship to their child. How about the many public schools in the Southwest that have been overcrowded by these children, depriving the children of LEGAL citizens of a better education. Recently, a number of Hospitals in southern California have gone bankrupt and shut down, due to treating people who cannot pay for treatment. There are many other ways in which these illegal immigrants have negatively impacted us ! here in the southwestern states, without being held accountable. Would YOU expect to go to another country illegally, then take advantage of it's social graces and get away with it, without any consequences? I don't think any honest person would expect that! All of the negative circumstances that the illegal immigrants have caused, should make it clear to most people that any possible positive impact is insufficient. President Bush and many others in the media, have recently been saying, that these immigrants help our country by doing jobs that Americans won't do. This is not a completely accurate statement. The truth is, that Americans have lost the opportunity to do those jobs. This happened because employers and home owners, have instead chosen to hire illegal immigrants who will work for much, much less! In the early 1980's, the gardener that took care of the apartment complex that I lived in was a legal, English speaking white man. The fact is, there used to be many American gardeners here in the southwest. Just as there used to be many American maids, construction workers, cooks, busboys, janitors, and fast-food employees. Our southwestern states in particular, should consider calling on all those LEGAL American citizens who are on the unemployment and welfare lists, and give them the opportunity to do those jobs. The key question regarding this whole illegal immigrant subject is this: "Is America willing to sacrifice it's internal morale, and concurrently state to the world, that we are so tolerant of illegal and unlawful activity, that we are willing to give amnesty to people who have illegally trespassed into our country?" After reading about how the Senate has recently considered giving citizenship to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants (as long as they were here before a much too recent cut-off date), I began to wonder just how committed our Senators are to the LEGAL citizens of America. If the Senate passes this bill, the majority of LEGAL citizens in this country are going to feel betrayed. Our probable conclusion would be, that our Senators are either afraid of the illegal immigrants, or the Senators are looking forward to the possibility of extra tax dollars. I am an immigrant myself, though legal. When I first came to this country, I made sure I speak, read, and write in English on par with native speakers. If anybody's background can be called disadvataged it is mine. Despite all this I graduated High School with honors, then graduated college with two degrees, and have thank G-d been employed since. I never took advantage of government programs though many were available to me. I paid taxes. For the necessary medical bills I payed from my own pocket. I've come here to be an American, because I believe in the goodness of core American conservative ideals. I also believe there is a lot I can contribute due to my unique background, but I've come to add - not replace. It sickens me to see that this great nation is passively standing by and letting its great values and culture be trampled. Perhaps the problem is that we don't educate our children in American history and values anymore. Instead we teach "tolerance" which ows its existence to conservative United States to begin with.
