Feingold’s Upset

The AP’s Laurie Kellman is reporting that Russ Feingold is upset that his ‘colleagues’ are abandoning him.

Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold accused fellow Democrats on Tuesday of cowering rather than joining him on trying to censure President Bush over domestic spying. “Democrats run and hide” when the administration invokes the war on terrorism, Feingold told reporters. Feingold introduced censure legislation Monday in the Senate but not a single Democrat has embraced it. Several have said they want to see the results of a Senate Intelligence Committee investigation before supporting any punitive legislation.

Republicans dismissed the proposal Tuesday as being more about Feingold’s 2008 presidential aspirations than Bush’s actions. On and off the Senate floor, they have dared Democrats to vote for the resolution.

“I’m amazed at Democrats…cowering with this president’s numbers so low,” Feingold said.

Russ, don’t take it personally. Deep down inside, I bet they totally agree with you. Unfortunately, you’re in a party where what’s on the exterior is what matters. Phrased differently, there’s alot of frontrunners amongst the Senate Democrats; chief among them Hillary and Chuckie. If they’re asked to choose between political expediency or principle, principle finishes a distant third place.

As for Democrats’ cowering despite “the President’s” low numbers, that might indicate that the President isn’t as weak as the polls suggest.

The Daily Kos lists the senators supporting censure…for Bill Clinton. This is a not-so-subtle shot at them considering this “Unfortunately, the president being censured was Bill Clinton, not George W. Bush. Because, you know, these senators had their priorities straight.

It’s stuff like this that makes politics fun. The Democrats scored huge points on the UAE port deal - taking some credibility away from President Bush on the GWOT. There were good reasons why the deal should have been done, but nobody was making the case very well, in a timely way. So now, if any attack does happen involving ports, the Republicans really own it.

That was last week. Now Feingold has all the dem blogs talking about how it’s a great idea to censure the President for wiretapping terrorists.
