Democratic GOTV Tactics

Wisconsin Democrats are trying to gin up their GOTV efforts by putting initiatives on the ballots for “their April 4 elections.”

Kewaunee, a city of 3,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan, is one of 22 cities, villages and towns in Wisconsin that have an Iraq referendum on their April 4 ballots, elections usually dominated by local races for mayors, city councils and school boards. Fifty troops from Wisconsin have died in Iraq since the invasion nearly three years ago. The effort in Wisconsin, in tiny villages like Frederic and Ephraim and the larger cities of Madison and La Crosse, is designed to influence later races for Congress, said coordinator Steve Burns at the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice in Madison.

It’s obvious that this is designed to (a) increase pacifist voters going to the voting booths in hopes of increasing the anti-war general election candidates and (b) to use this issue as a motivator for the general election.

Considering the amount of liberals in Wisconsin, they might well have an impact on who the Democratic Party runs in the general election. This, in turn, might impact how many seats they lose in November.

Putting these initiatives on the ballot might also be to help drag Gov. Doyle into the Governor’s Mansion, though that’s an uphill battle according to this Strategic Vision poll:

11. If the election for Governor was held today, and the choice was between Jim Doyle, the Democrat and Mark Green, the Republican, whom would you vote for?
Jim Doyle 44%
Mark Green 43%

Here’s hoping that Democrats in other states put these types of initiatives on their ballots. Doing so would make for easy pickings for The Architect.
