Bloviation Central
I couldn’t force myself into watching the entire day’s worth of Senate Democrats testifying at what had been billed as the Alito hearings but I’ll tell you what I saw.
1. Democratic senators did most of the testifying. I’m refering most specifically of Sens. Kennedy and Biden, who looked like idiots for as long as I could stomach watching. Sen. Kennedy’s willful mischaracterizations, first of the President’s inherent powers as Commander-in-Chief, then of Alito’s record, was pathetic.
Massachussetts shouldn’t tolerate this idiot anymore and should put him out to pasture. The least they should do is put him out of our misery. Everyone but him sees his age wearing him down. He slurs words, frequently mangles the nominee’s name and doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s asking. It’s obvious to anyone with eyes that see and a brain that thinks that his staffers have written the old boy’s questions and he’s just reading the script.
And he isn’t a good improvisor when people challenge him like Alito did. After that, he looked as confused as Howell Heflin looked in questioning Clarence Thomas. In short, Kennedy looked as clueless today as Heflin did then. No longer can I justify calling the Senate the “greatest deliberative body” in the world and Kennedy’s a major reason why.
2. It’s obvious that Sen. Biden would fail logic 101 if it were offered. He starts by calling these the most serious hearings of possibly the last 3 decades. Then he rambles on and on, much like he did with Chief Justice Roberts, throwing out sarcastic comment after sarcastic comment, often laced with jokes. And this is what we’d expect in “the most serious hearings of possibly the last 3 decades? Please.
Then he rambles some more. Talk about cruel and inhumane punishment. It’s obvious after watching Biden that the McCain anti-torture law was directed at the wrong people. They shouldn’t have written it with American soldiers in mind. They should’ve written it with people like Kennedy and Biden in mind.
It’s also obvious that Biden is a disgusting elitist who is a legend in his own mind.
3. You’re probably wondering when I’ll get to Alito’s testimony. I won’t be offering specific examples of it because, in many respects, today wasn’t about Alito. In fact, today’s story is that the old bulls of the Senate Democrats thought it was all about themselves. And about taking cheapshots at the President via their monologues/diatribes.
4. The best idea I heard all day, in fact, came on Hannity & Colmes, when Catherine Crier said that she was embarassed with Sens. Kennedy and others and suggesting that they shouldn’t let senators grandstand like that but should hire a lawyer who would ask the questions so we could find out what the nominee thinks about important issues.
At the end of the day, Alito came through untouched and unscathed. Mostly because Senate Democrats were more interested in taking cheapshots at President Bush but also because Alito is so much smarter than them.
After a torturous day like today, I couldn’t agree more. No one should be subjected to that type of demagoguery.
