I'm reminded of an example that happened in Washington, DC a few years ago (the details have slipped my mind but the basics are still clear). During a city government meeting someone used a word that is uncommon and has the meaning of thrifty or cheap. The word? Niggardly. He was immediately fired, because the less-than-well-educated majority of city government thought he used a racial slur. After an enormous amount of ranting and raving he was eventually reinstated, though I wondered at the time, and still wonder, why he'd want to work there after that.
