Just because France was defeated in WWII it doesn’t follow that they didn’t fight (Americans should know that). They fought very hard, never more so than the valiant rearguard at Dunkirk. If the French forces hadn’t stoically stood their ground there - slowly smashed to pieces by the world’s most efficient military killing machine - Allied victory might never have come.

And, don’t forget France had by then fought the Bosch to a standstill once already in the 20th Century. The magnitude of the French sacrifice to the defeat of the barbaric Hun in WWI (no sarcasm intended) was immense, perhaps equalled only by the Soviets in WWII.

Remember how bad America felt after Vietnam? Now multiply that (as casualties per population) by about 100. But a mere 20 years later they stood up to the juggernaut again.

When you know the truth about her magnificent efforts you won’t find all those French surrender jokes very funny…

You’re discussing the competetion between cultures. Very well. Do you want to be on the winning side or the losing side? It’s your choice, but if you don’t want to be on the winning side, then I hope that you have no hand in policy decisions.

Even if we did this, it’d take a long time to locate all the illegals already here and deport them. Lawyers and judges have made that so difficult and expensive that it swamps the INS. I think such a policy would create a lot of domestic unrest and violence.

That’s the point: Most illegal immigrants don’t go home. They come, they stay.

Moreover, you’re harping on Martin P’s comments, but not addressing them.

He’s talking about illegal immigrants that don’t assimilate, and there’s no good argument to keep taxing Americans to pay for this — which is what’s been happening.

Finally, you’re also missing the point of this post - Australia is getting tough on Muslims that come to the country, but refuse to assimilate (eg don’t teach their children about the country), preaching against western civilization. Look at London.

Immigrants are welcome, but only when they are grateful and respectful to the nation that allows them entry. Nothing wrong with that.

Finally, for those questioning definition of America’s culture (e.g. values and ideologies), in basic terms: embracing the spirit of western democracy which affords liberty and freedom.

It’s entirely inappropriate and unacceptable to move into a country and then despise it, work against it, and denounce it. That’s called ungrateful, and there’s a solution for it. When in Rome, or else go back.

It is expensive and the Feds should help, but I think having a lot of Mexicans experienced with American culture a good thing.

Maybe they will demand better when they get home.

In any case with ease of travel and all Mexico is integrating with America. It ought to be on our terms.

I think every American every day should take an oath or affirmation to preserve and defend the Constitution, same as Congress Critters, the President, The Supremes (too bad they can’t read), naturalized citizens and the military.

Australian troops in Vietnam, even though conscripts, knew a little better than many of the American conscripts how to go about jungle warfare including, as one American vet told me, not kicking an ‘empty’ Coke can lying in the middle of a jungle trail.

The quagmire of Vietnam was in the US media, not SE Asia, and ultimately defeated the US at home.

BTW, patd95 a story told to us by the granddaughter of an armoured cavalry colonel which took place during WWII:

An Australian tank was crippled by heavy German fire and the German field commander in excellent English called on the crew to surrender saying: “Australian, you have fought bravely but you are defeated. Give yourselves up and you will be treated well. What do you say”

After a moment’s silence an Australian voice was heard yelling from inside the tank: “well, youse can go get fucked for a start.”

It took several minutes to source a translation of the vernacular. The Germans opened fire destroying the tank.

That’s just a taste of the Aussie fighting spirit.

I’d really like to see this idea of “adopting culture” spelled out - let’s get past the rhetoric and say what we expect from immigrants. Get a job and learn English? Or is there more?

The Republicans listen to big business, and want the cheap labor. So do the Democrats, albeit to a smaller degree, but they also have a large section of their party who just thinks open borders is the best policy. While a number of right wingers agree with open borders, they are generally the ones that are Libertarians (as in party, not just leaning).

Not to mention, the media would have a field day if a US politician ever said anything like that
