Reuniting The United States: A Few Words Of Advice from Australia
In this dark era of global terrorism, the major deadly attacks against western civilization by Islamic extremists have resulted, quite ironically, in lifting the veil of political correctness, as the citizens and leaders of democratic nations are beginning to recognize the lethal consequences of unchecked immigration and non-assimilation.
Australia’s The Age reports: “Education Minister Brendan Nelson has bluntly told Islamists who do not want to accept and teach Australian values that they should “clear off”. (Hattip: Jawa Report)
“And John Howard has warned that mosques, prayer halls and Muslim schools will be watched “to the extent necessary” to ensure they do not give comfort to terrorism.”
Amen.
“A day after the Prime Minister’s summit with Muslim leaders, the Government stepped up its push to get “Australian values”  epitomised, it says, by the Anzac story of Simpson and his donkey  taught comprehensively to Muslim children. On Tuesday Treasurer Peter Costello said people thinking of coming to Australia who did not like Australian values and preferred a society that practised sharia law should go elsewhere.
Dr Nelson said he would soon meet the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils to discuss programs to ensure those in Islamic schools and all other children fully understood Australian history and values.”
Immigration is a privilege. This seems to be forgotten. Thus, it’s not only fair but proper to consider that people entering a nation should understand and appreciate (dare I say adopt) the adopting country’s history and values.
Diversity is delightful, but not at the expense of national unity. The following sums it up perfectly:
“We don’t care where people come from; we don’t mind what religion they’ve got or what their particular view of the world is. But if you want to be in Australia, if you want to raise your children in Australia, we fully expect those children to be taught and to accept Australian values and beliefs,” he said.
“We want them to understand our history and our culture, the extent to which we believe in mateship and giving another person a hand up and a fair go. And basically, if people don’t want to be Australians and they don’t want to live by Australian values and understand them, well basically they can clear off.“
Yes, it’s worth re-reading, printing out, and sharing with your friends and neighbors.
If only some of our elected officials would speak up with such refreshing candor.
While a sundry special interests will be quick to cry racism and fight to discredit the view, the statements are clear. Australia is saying: We welcome you, we accept you and we will help you — but not if you don’t embrace our culture.
Afterall, if foreigners want to “celebrate” (promote) their own cultures, wouldn’t it make sense to stay where they are? (Oh, here comes the fingerpointing)
“Mr Howard, asked on Perth radio if the Government was prepared to get inside mosques and Islamic schools, said it had a right to know if the “virtues of terrorism” were being preached in the Islamic community.
“It is very hard for a government or any of its agencies to penetrate every aspect of life, and we don’t want to interfere with people’s enjoyment of life,” he said.
“But equally, if people are not willing to give their first loyalty to this country, they obviously must understand that that will arouse enormous concern within the rest of the Australian community.”
Amazing.
With just a few sentences, Australia’s leadership has managed to pinpoint the inherent problems and propose actionable solutions to the issue of runaway immigration; balancing security with tolerance. America’s obligation is no different.
As London is now learning at the cost of innocent lives, hostility to state by foreign groups must not be tolerated. Terrorist bombings are the result.
We would encourage every governor, every congressman, every senator and even the President to reflect upon the quoted remarks above by PM John Howard and Education Minister Brendan Nelson.
Substitute “America” for every mention of Australia, and see how effectively it reads.
Current times call for real action, not empty rhetoric. Or, God forbid, will it take another major attack on our shores?

I had the pleasure of meeting a Col in the RAR in DC last year. At a reception there was a Frog Navy Officer who questioned why Aus was in Afghanistan. The Col, without missing a beat, turned to the Frog and said, ‘Well, unlike your country, Mate, we like to kill!’ Classic!

Otherwise, correct. :)

No frog lover I, but Proud Aussie’s comment “Aust 9th in WWII vs vichy france” disregards the very real fact that the vichy troops may not have been very enthusiastic about fighting troops opposed to Nazism. If properly motivated, they might have acquitted themselves better.

Yeah, but neither party will ever get serious about immigration in the US.
The Republicans listen to big business, and want the cheap labor. So do the Democrats, albeit to a smaller degree, but they also have a large section of their party who just thinks open borders is the best policy. While a number of right wingers agree with open borders, they are generally the ones that are Libertarians (as in party, not just leaning).
Not to mention, the media would have a field day if a US politician ever said anything like that
August 28th, 2005 at 9:17 pm
Yes indeed, look how immigrants to America adopted US Native American culture, look how the Spanish who arrived in South America embraced the Inca way of life.
Indeed looking at Oz it’self, think how proud Mr Howard and his ilk can be about the way they have integrated into aboriginal culture…..
August 28th, 2005 at 10:16 pm
Now, if for the sake of immigrants, we could find some definition of “American values,” we’d be all set!
I’d really like to see this idea of “adopting culture” spelled out - let’s get past the rhetoric and say what we expect from immigrants. Get a job and learn English? Or is there more?
Because if that’s the requirement, hell, I know lots of native-born Americans who should be deported.

Amusingly enough, the Australian media has pointed out that Simpson (of the donkey fame) would be classified as an illegal immigrant these days. He probably couldn’t do his work at a modern day Gallipoli because he’d be in an internment camp.

Martin P,
What you are asking for is more Republican Socialism: price supports for criminals.
Not to worry. With the war on tobacco it appears the Dems are joining in too.
Proof positive that if we ever run short of criminals in this country Congress has a lot of experience making more.
Did I mention alcohol prohibition?

We could undercut the people smugglers by making it easier for people who want to work, shop, and visit in America.
It also would make the bad guy border jumpers stand out rather than being just another face in the crowd.
Or we could just hire a bunch of unemployed East German border guards and their dogs. Add in mine fields, machine gun nests, plus shoot to kill orders and we could seal the sucker tight.
Just remember, Communist East Germany was destroyed by open borders. Don’t let it happen here.

Point of order Amos. The Australians did bloody well in Vietnam. The casuality rate was significantly lower than the US rate because the Americans were unused at that time to jungle warfare, where the Aussies had plenty of practice.
Australian troops in Vietnam, even though conscripts, knew a little better than many of the American conscripts how to go about jungle warfare including, as one American vet told me, not kicking an ‘empty’ Coke can lying in the middle of a jungle trail.
The quagmire of Vietnam was in the US media, not SE Asia, and ultimately defeated the US at home.
BTW, patd95 a story told to us by the granddaughter of an armoured cavalry colonel which took place during WWII:
An Australian tank was crippled by heavy German fire and the German field commander in excellent English called on the crew to surrender saying: “Australian, you have fought bravely but you are defeated. Give yourselves up and you will be treated well. What do you say”
After a moment’s silence an Australian voice was heard yelling from inside the tank: “well, youse can go get fucked for a start.”
It took several minutes to source a translation of the vernacular. The Germans opened fire destroying the tank.
That’s just a taste of the Aussie fighting spirit.

Martin P.,
It is expensive and the Feds should help, but I think having a lot of Mexicans experienced with American culture a good thing.
Maybe they will demand better when they get home.
In any case with ease of travel and all Mexico is integrating with America. It ought to be on our terms.
BTW American values?
I think every American every day should take an oath or affirmation to preserve and defend the Constitution, same as Congress Critters, the President, The Supremes (too bad they can’t read), naturalized citizens and the military.
Scrap the socialist pledge to the flag.
August 28th, 2005 at 11:54 pm
Hey M. Simon,
YOu “think having a lot of Mexicans experienced with American culture a good thing,” because “maybe they’ll demand better when they get home”?
That’s the point: Most illegal immigrants don’t go home. They come, they stay.
Moreover, you’re harping on Martin P’s comments, but not addressing them.
He’s talking about illegal immigrants that don’t assimilate, and there’s no good argument to keep taxing Americans to pay for this — which is what’s been happening.
Finally, you’re also missing the point of this post - Australia is getting tough on Muslims that come to the country, but refuse to assimilate (eg don’t teach their children about the country), preaching against western civilization. Look at London.
Immigrants are welcome, but only when they are grateful and respectful to the nation that allows them entry. Nothing wrong with that.
Finally, for those questioning definition of America’s culture (e.g. values and ideologies), in basic terms: embracing the spirit of western democracy which affords liberty and freedom.
It’s entirely inappropriate and unacceptable to move into a country and then despise it, work against it, and denounce it. That’s called ungrateful, and there’s a solution for it. When in Rome, or else go back.

Australia is sounding the right (albeit, indelicately phrased) note: be an Aussie or don’t come to Australia . . .

To be fair: libertarians may support open borders (to varying degrees) but certainly do NOT support welfare handouts to immigrants. If immigrants were screened for security reasons AND never received tax dollars, surely the whole situation would be very different. People respond to incentives.
August 29th, 2005 at 2:04 pm
We obviously don’t really care about illegal immigration, since most of them find jobs here. It’s kind of hard for people who think the purpose of government is to make everybody’s life happy, safe and healthy to get upset over poor Latinos coming here, but if they don’t want to bankrupt all our welfare state programs, they have to decide whether we want things like free health care and minimum wages or a wall across the southern border.
Even if we did this, it’d take a long time to locate all the illegals already here and deport them. Lawyers and judges have made that so difficult and expensive that it swamps the INS. I think such a policy would create a lot of domestic unrest and violence.

You’re discussing the competetion between cultures. Very well. Do you want to be on the winning side or the losing side? It’s your choice, but if you don’t want to be on the winning side, then I hope that you have no hand in policy decisions.

As a dinkum Aussie conservative I love John Howard and hate Jack Chirac with the best of ‘em, but I do have to pipe up in support of the French people as a whole.
Just because France was defeated in WWII it doesn’t follow that they didn’t fight (Americans should know that). They fought very hard, never more so than the valiant rearguard at Dunkirk. If the French forces hadn’t stoically stood their ground there - slowly smashed to pieces by the world’s most efficient military killing machine - Allied victory might never have come.
And, don’t forget France had by then fought the Bosch to a standstill once already in the 20th Century. The magnitude of the French sacrifice to the defeat of the barbaric Hun in WWI (no sarcasm intended) was immense, perhaps equalled only by the Soviets in WWII.
Remember how bad America felt after Vietnam? Now multiply that (as casualties per population) by about 100. But a mere 20 years later they stood up to the juggernaut again.
When you know the truth about her magnificent efforts you won’t find all those French surrender jokes very funny…
Vive a France, this Aussie right-winger thinks you’re all right.
