Funding PBS
Should the federal government (i.e., our money) fund PBS?
The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee met Monday to answer that question. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is a private, non-profit corporation that was created by Congress in 1967. The CPB is responsible for administering funding of Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), both funded by the government and private donations.
In classic irreverent style, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin “sharply questioned” (berated) the conservative chairman of the CPB Kenneth Tomlinson for suggesting that left-leaning programming be offset by right-leaning programming to allow exposure to both points of view. God forbid! “I don’t understand what your agenda is here,” Durbin pouted. Agenda? Only to a Democrat could fairness and balance be considered an agenda to be impugned. In keeping with the current changing tide in America towards traditional values, the new CEO of CPB is Patricia Harrison, a former official in the Republican Party. Perhaps some cosmic justice is at work to balance out the formerly unchallenged flow of filth and politically correct excrement which has been funded by the American tax payer for far too long.
PBS does air good programming, both educational and informative. In the past 2 decades, however, PBS children’s programming has transformed into a statement about homosexual tolerance and lifestyle differences. It used to be that there was no need to obscure the educational component of the show with a forced barrage of social and moral ills. It was also common knowledge that people were of different races. This is America, the Great Melting Pot of the world. The fact that Sesame Street used to naturally possess a variety of nationalities and cultures created an atmosphere of commonality. Today, we’re all forced to acknowledge racial and sexual differences before moving on to the alphabet, obscuring the message of tolerance altogether. If one were truly open minded, it would be the content of the character that mattered, not the outside appearance. Chuck character, let’s focus on appearance. Then morality need not be such a burden to our young people.
That’s child’s play. The real goodies come into play for adults. Imagine the joy of stumbling upon what can only be defined as soft gay porn in the program, “Black Men Who Love Black Men.” It was a sexual celebration of gay black men, slowly rolling in bed together covered by strategically located sheets, kissing to an audio of poems by black men about loving black men. This along with political bias is clearly problematic for a network which receives 100s of millions of dollars from the US taxpayer.
PBS has programing that is interesting, educational and fun as well. Many programs on the arts, nature, science and history are right on target. However, with the minority party (Democrats) continually acting like the majority party, pushing its agenda down the throat of America, it is only fair to be, well, only fair in public broadcasting. Let there be appropriate moral codes for airing a show as well as programming that represents the majority. Aren’t Democrats about representing all the people, or is that simply jargon uttered during an election year?
Dick Durbin said at the hearing, “I just don’t get it.” Indeed.
