Hurricane Harriet

Sweeping across the G.O.P.

Ed “Captain” Morrissey has an op-ed running in today’s Washington Post entitled, How Harriet Unleashed a Storm on the Right.

The article begins with a taste of irony:

Well, he’s finally done it. By nominating White House lawyer Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, George Bush has managed to accomplish what Al Gore, John Kerry, Tom Daschle and any number of Democratic heavyweights have been unable to do: He has cracked the Republican monolith. Split his own party activists. And how.

Indeed.

We first expressed our concerns six days ago, as the storm was just beginning. Unfortunately, it’s only continued along a destructive path.

Morrissey offers a good analysis of the news and takes a few interesting metaphors to characterize the divisions with our party:

All you have to do is look at the blogosphere of the right to grasp the magnitude of the bomb the president has dropped. The cyberspace crowd of activists divides up into three basic camps

The Loyalist Army, The Rebel Alliance, and The Trench-Dwelling Dogfaces.

Where do we stand?

Still in the trenches. And keeping a watchful eye out for our enemies, knowing that politics, like battle, is subject to surprise attacks when our backs our turned.

Here’s to hoping we’ll get all the troops back in line.

UPDATE:
Cao shares the sentiment. She laments:

I am ashamed of conservatives who are beginning to sound, look, act and use the rhetoric of leftists.”

There was a time when I shared the views of other conservative Christians who believed in the president and fighting the war on terror. I have just perused a couple of websites where there were cartoons making fun of President Bush and Ms. Miers, and I think this kind of behavior is absolutely despicable.

There is not respect, faith or love anymore, simply disdain, criticism and contempt.
