Confirm Judge Alito

Confirm Alito

Ok, our prediction didn’t come to pass. But we’re very happy with Judge Alito and strongly support President Bush on the nomination.

ABCNews reports:

Judge Alito is one of the most accomplished and respected judges in America,” the president said in announcing Alito’s selection. “He’s got a mastery of the law and a deep commitment to justice.” Bush exhorted the Senate to confirm his choice by the end of the year.

CNN describes “Alito has hefty legal resume”
GatewayPundit has video and round-up.

Michelle Malkin is actively covering the story.

“Experienced. Well-thought-of by conservative constitutional scholars. Not a diversity/crony pick. Young. This is a nominee the Right can get behind.”

Lawhawk quips: “Harriet who?”
PoliPundit declares, “confirmation is most certainly assured.”
ConfirmThem says, “Thank you, Mr. President”
Ed Whelan at NRO declares, “Congratulations, President Bush!”

“In selecting Third Circuit judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. for the Supreme Court, President Bush has made a truly outstanding nomination that deserves widespread acclaim. By any objective criteria, it is doubtful that there is anyone now or in recent decades (yes, not even Chief Justice Roberts) whose experience and qualifications better prepare him for the Supreme Court.”

Patterico analyzes Alito’s dissent in Planned Parenthood v. Casey:

In that case, Judge Alito wrote a cogent dissent which argued for the validity of a law requiring spousal notification before an abortion.

We need to be ready to counter this talking point if Judge Alito is nominated. Luckily, we are armed with the truth.

Jawa Report says, “Expect a fight from liberals…” (As always)
Powerline asserts:

We’re about to get the fight over Constitutional principles that conservatives have looked forward to for years.”

Myopic Zeal declares, “Bring it on”
So does Jim Geraghty. And RedState.
Conservative Outpost cries, “Let the battle begin!”

Althouse says, “refer to him as Scalito”
RSR suggests, “A new storm gathers: Little Nino”
Justin also points out an Alito ruling on the 1st Amendment:

“Judge Alito wrote the majority opinion that struck down a PA school system’s anti-harassment law. This is a fantastic opinion! Excerpts below in this article from Feb 15, 2001 in the Dallas Morning News.”

StopTheACLU cheers: “Ruling against the ACLU? I think we like him!” Jay says, “ACLU and PFAW are shaking in their boots”

ConfederateYankee offers this prediction:

“Liberals will shriek themselves into irrelevancy, the ‘Gang of 14′ will fold, Alito will be easily confirmed, and both sides will squirrel away cash and rhetoric for the ‘06 and ‘08 campaigns.”

The Kos Kidz opine. A selection:

“Now the Democratic leadership has a real chance to show us whether they have any backbone or if they are just the usual motley collection of spineless wimps! Fight this every inch of the way! The GOP “Moving America to the Dark Ages”.

Mark Coffey has the “Top 10″ (for now)
BrutallyHonest says, “Let the gnashing and wailing begin…”

Ed Morrisey reminds Dems of being careful what you ask for:

“Democrats blew their one opportunity to get a moderate on the bench during the Bush administration by waiting until Miers withdrew before defending her. Prior to that, Charles Schumer and Pat Leahy took great pains to call her questionnaire response “insulting” and echoing conservative complaints that her resume seemed too lightweight for a nomination to the Supreme Court. Had they pledged to support her, Bush likely would have allowed her to coast through the hearings to a floor vote despite the dissatisfaction on the right.”

Oh well.

This time around, let’s keep our powder dry and let the Dems brawl it out. As they did with us during Miers.

UPDATE:
Hugh Hewitt has a poll. Results here.
It’s great to see us united again.

Mark Finkelstein highlights Today Show “analysis”
Ace reports, “Schumer: Alito Would Support Jim Crow!”
(Uhhh, okay, Chuckie, sure)

Let the games begin.

    Good Nomination

Liberals are apoplectic over the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito for SCOTUS. That means President Bush must have nominated the right person. When Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer were praising Harriet Miers, I knew she was the wrong person for the job.
