Babbling Boxer: Fisking The Senator’s Statements on Miers’ Withdrawal
It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.
Despite being predictable, we thought our readers would be interested in reading Senator Boxer’s statement on the withdrawal of Harriet Miers’ nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court:
“The withdrawal of the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court is the consequence of a rushed Presidential decision with virtually no consultation with the Senate.”
THE TRUTH: Sen. Boxer’s memory must be going the way of her intellect on this one. The President talked with over 80 senators before nominating Harriet Miers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Boxer isn’t one of the senators consulted because she’s so extremist left that it’s a waste of time to talk with her.
“This is not a happy day for our country.”
TRANSLATION: This isn’t a happy day for Democrats. Harriet Miers was likely as good as we could’ve hoped for but now we’re going to get a true conservative like Luttig or Alito nominated and confirmed.
“The President should follow the tradition of past presidents’ handling of Supreme Court vacancies and nominate a moderate candidate after full consultation with the key Democratic and Republican members of the Senate.”
Sen. Boxer, history isn’t your strong suit. Your own leader, Harry Reid, endorsed her and said he recommended her. As with the first Supreme Court nominee, President Bush invited Reid, Leahy, Frist and Specter to the White House to kick off the process, where they had a lengthy conversation about this. Sen. Schumer was asked. It seems that your extremist judicial viewpoint excluded you from those consultations but that’s your fault, not the President’s.
As for moderates, get serious. Give me people of stature, people with intellectual heft. That precludes anyone that you’d like since you wouldn’t recognize intellectual heft if it bit you.
“For example, before Justices Ginsburg and Breyer were nominated, the White House had extensive consultation with the Judiciary Committee members of both parties. Those nominations went smoothly because of respect for the Constitution.”
Again, Sen. Boxer’s memory is faulty. Before President Clinton nominated Ginsburg, he called Orrin Hatch, then the Judiciary Committee Chairman and asked about another judge. Hatch said that nominee wouldn’t fly with many people of both parties. (The name of that potential nominee wasn’t released to avoid unnessessarily embarassing the person.) Clinton then asked about Ginsburg. Hatch said he thought she’d sail through. End of consultation.
The only other conclusion we could draw from Sen. Boxer’s statements about consultation is that she’s simply lying. I won’t accuse her of that but I wouldn’t rule it out, either.
“This country deserves better than an arrogant Executive Branch that ignores the constitutionally-mandated advice and consent role of the Senate.”
THE TRUTH: This country, and California especially, deserves better than an arrogant, extremist left winger like Sen. Boxer. Something that I’ve noticed in her ‘newsletters’ is that she’s constantly issuing ultimatums, whether it’s for timetables for troop withdrawals or Supreme Court nominees. It’s like she thinks she’s the one dictating the terms of the debate. It’s like she thinks she’s the President. That’s the height of arrogance.
“In going forward, the President should graciously accept Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s commitment to stay on the Court as long as she is needed.”
Sen. Boxer, what do you think he’s done? Are you really so ignorant to not have noticed? I guess that’s possible, isn’t it?
[Editor's note: Perhaps she's been too busy being feted by "celebrities" while promoting her new book to pay attention to peripheral issues. But like we said before: Don't buy the book, just read her press releases. The quality and content should be on par.]
