I don't believe this has parallels to the Vietnam conflict nor the Civil War. The part of the equation that people forget is the Al Qaeda element there that, if the intelligence is to be believed, are preparing for an imminent American pullout by planning for another Taliban type rule. We can't afford for that to happen. We can't leave until the US and Iraqi commanders on the ground are satisfied that the Iraqi security forces are ready. Can one seriously believe the Iraqis are ready now to take care of security? How will our standing with our allies be if we left prematurely? How will the Iraqi government see our premature pullout? How much bolder will Al Qaeda be knowing that they now know the American people so well? The future doesn't bode well if lack of vision permeates the government, Democrats and Republicans alike.

To leave for a moment the endless repetion of similarities to Vietnam, instead compare this war to the Civil War: not so much in terms of the war itself, but of Reconstruction. In my history class, we ended our semester with reconstruction because it must be understood along with the Civil War itself. The longer the Union troops stayed in the South, the more they were resented. The removal of opressive policies allowed a previously disenfranchised minority to show its newfound strength. The healing of the nation was accomplished only by giving the individual newly elected governors and political leaders the ability to train and support themselves. The sooner we can leave Iraq, the better off Iraqis will be.

I'm no politician but even this doesn't make sense to me (pulling out immediately). Why is it that no-one listens to the Iraqis or the soldiers there? There ARE goals and they ARE being met. I guess it's too much to ask for to be rational. Some people are too mired in their feelings rather than common-sense. Facts confuse them too much.

Why should I waste my time with you? I am 54, and have lived through Vietnam, Nixon, et al. This is the same thing. Get over it - we cannot invade another country and expect the world to love it, or for ourselves to love it. It is wrong; it was wrong when the Soviets did it (to which as I recall we more or less strenuously objected), and it is wrong now.

you dissect his statement quickly but you don't ever look at his record. he's supported almost every pentagon spending increase which has come his way, he's fought consistently for more troops and more materials in iraq and he was a supporter of the war.

his statement was focused on securing more supplies for the troops in iraq, which he has been fighting for since 2002.

but i guess you'd rather just call him an idiot.

oh, and it isn't appeasement since we created the terrorist problem. iraq is like vietnam in that we're locked into a war where we've completely misunderstsood our enemy and in which we have no goals, just endless fighting.

Great Post.

According to my research it will take 400,000 men to secure Iraq.
They have 200,000 already trained.
We have 150,000 there.

As they keep training - we can pull back. Why are the Dems in such a hurry? Dec. 15th elections. THEY want chaos at that event worse than the insurgents do.
