“Hawkish Democrat” Calls for Iraq Pullout
Who would’ve known that there is such a creature as a truly hawkish Democrat? That’s the best-kept secret in Washington, if it’s true.
The AP’s Liz Sidoti reports that Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa) has held a press conference, where he said:
“Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf region.”
Talk about the epitome of hyperventillating stupidity. Sheesh. This guy’s a hawk? I don’t think so. Yes, I know that he’s won a pair of Purple Hearts. That means that he served heroically during his term in the military and I’m thankful that he did that. But that doesn’t give him carte blanche on military issues. In recent days, we’ve heard that Congress doesn’t have the same intelligence data that the President and Vice President had. Based on that alone, Murtha isn’t in a position to comment on the conduct of the war.
Furthermore, he isn’t qualified to direct a war just because he served in the military. How many battle plans did he put together? Just because you serve in the military doesn’t mean that you’re qualified as a military expert. It certainly didn’t qualify John Kerry as a military expert.
Murtha doesn’t offer evidence to support his claims. That’s the first thing we should demand from Murtha or any other media-proclaimed DemHawk.
Let’s break this down line-by-line:
“Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk.”
Based on what, Mr. Murtha? Based on your playing politics with this issue? It can’t be based on the fact that we’re training the Iraqi military at a faster pace than ever before. It can’t be based on the fact that Iraq is courageously marching toward freedom and self-governance at a pace faster than we got there at our country’s birth.
It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America.
Oh really? You think America is better off if they cut and ran immediately or at least hurriedly? This either makes you a politician playing games or it makes you the biggest idiot this side of Howard Dean and that’s even debateable.
It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the Iraqi people.
I guess you think it’s better for them that they get overrun with Zarqawi’s terrorists and Saddam’s insurgents. I guess you think that they’re better off living under the rule of tyrants who don’t care about human life, at least human life that doesn’t conform to their warped perspective of the world. That’s sad, Mr. Murtha. In fact, it’s pathetic.
It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the Persian Gulf region.
When you’re right, you’re right. Who wants a stabilized Iraq? Who wants sane people living under a Constitution that protects all peoples’ rights, including the right to believe in the religion of their choice and to be able to say what’s on their minds without worrying about getting your head chopped off if you say it? You’re right, Mr. Murtha. That sounds like an awful place to live.
Vice President Dick Cheney jumped into the fray Wednesday by assailing Democrats who contend the Bush administration manipulated intelligence on Iraq, calling their criticism “one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city.”
Murtha, a Marine intelligence officer in Vietnam, angrily shot back at Cheney: “I like guys who’ve never been there that criticize us who’ve been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war, and then don’t like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done.”
Notice that Murtha didn’t attack Cheney’s positions with anything but personal attacks. Don’t expect him to, either. Yes, he’ll offer ‘an alternative plan’. The thing is that it isn’t a viable plan. PERIOD. It isn’t a plan, it’s a surrender. Appeasement by any other name is still appeasement. Cut and run isn’t a policy; it’s a character flaw.
The top Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, Murtha has earned bipartisan respect for his grasp of military issues over three decades in Congress.
All that hard work to gain that reputation is now flushed down the toilet because he decided to play politics with national security. Never again will he regain his credibility on this issue.
He planned to introduce a resolution Thursday that, if passed by both the House and the Senate, would force the president to withdraw U.S. troops.
That resolution doesn’t stand a snowball’s prayer in hell of getting signed into law, thereby making this just another Democratic publicity stunt.

Instead of “hawkish,” CNN calls Murtha a “senior Democrat”
What’s his age have to do with it?

Great Post.
According to my research it will take 400,000 men to secure Iraq.
They have 200,000 already trained.
We have 150,000 there.
As they keep training - we can pull back. Why are the Dems in such a hurry? Dec. 15th elections. THEY want chaos at that event worse than the insurgents do.

you dissect his statement quickly but you don’t ever look at his record. he’s supported almost every pentagon spending increase which has come his way, he’s fought consistently for more troops and more materials in iraq and he was a supporter of the war.
his statement was focused on securing more supplies for the troops in iraq, which he has been fighting for since 2002.
but i guess you’d rather just call him an idiot.
oh, and it isn’t appeasement since we created the terrorist problem. iraq is like vietnam in that we’re locked into a war where we’ve completely misunderstsood our enemy and in which we have no goals, just endless fighting.

Murtha Unaware of Consequences
Congressman John Murtha (D-PA) is calling for an immediate withdrawal of American forces from Iraq. All the talk about Iraq deadlines and withdrawal dates recently must have the white flag industry here in the U.S. in a frenzy.

Why should I waste my time with you? I am 54, and have lived through Vietnam, Nixon, et al. This is the same thing. Get over it - we cannot invade another country and expect the world to love it, or for ourselves to love it. It is wrong; it was wrong when the Soviets did it (to which as I recall we more or less strenuously objected), and it is wrong now.

How Do You Think Our Soldiers Feel….
Now, Colonel Hunt, before you start yelling at me…I understand that Murtha is a war hero….I understand that he served his country. Which makes me wonder even more why he would make these statements.

Hahaha, Steve and Richard Hartwick are dumb idiots. “Oh my god, every time America does anything it is wrong because foreigners said so.” It’s time for you guys to move to a country that is as dumb as you are. Then you can be happy and we won’t have to listen to your retarded shit anymore.

I’m no politician but even this doesn’t make sense to me (pulling out immediately). Why is it that no-one listens to the Iraqis or the soldiers there? There ARE goals and they ARE being met. I guess it’s too much to ask for to be rational. Some people are too mired in their feelings rather than common-sense. Facts confuse them too much.

To leave for a moment the endless repetion of similarities to Vietnam, instead compare this war to the Civil War: not so much in terms of the war itself, but of Reconstruction. In my history class, we ended our semester with reconstruction because it must be understood along with the Civil War itself. The longer the Union troops stayed in the South, the more they were resented. The removal of opressive policies allowed a previously disenfranchised minority to show its newfound strength. The healing of the nation was accomplished only by giving the individual newly elected governors and political leaders the ability to train and support themselves. The sooner we can leave Iraq, the better off Iraqis will be.

I don’t believe this has parallels to the Vietnam conflict nor the Civil War. The part of the equation that people forget is the Al Qaeda element there that, if the intelligence is to be believed, are preparing for an imminent American pullout by planning for another Taliban type rule. We can’t afford for that to happen. We can’t leave until the US and Iraqi commanders on the ground are satisfied that the Iraqi security forces are ready. Can one seriously believe the Iraqis are ready now to take care of security? How will our standing with our allies be if we left prematurely? How will the Iraqi government see our premature pullout? How much bolder will Al Qaeda be knowing that they now know the American people so well? The future doesn’t bode well if lack of vision permeates the government, Democrats and Republicans alike.
