No Shame: Latin leaders set to condemn U.S. border fence

Reuters reports: “Leaders at this weekend’s Ibero-American Summit were set to rebuke the United States for its plan to build a fence along the Mexican border to keep out illegal immigrants, an official said on Friday.”

A draft of a final declaration by the leaders of Spain, Portugal and Latin America gathering in Montevideo includes a special statement rejecting the fence plan.

“We express our deep concern over the decision adopted by the government of the United States,” it reads, adding regional leaders want to “make a firm call for the United States to reconsider” its decision.

Or else what? There’s always got to be an or else. That’s exactly what makes the U.N. so impotent. You can’t make a leader or a country comply with your demands unless there are consequences. And in this case we’re talking about America taking steps, albeit very small, to (perhaps 30 years too late) finally defend its borders and curb illegal immigration.

Speaking to reporters, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias called the fence “shameful” and said the money spent on it “would be better invested if it was used by the poor neighbors of the south to educate our kids.”

What’s the spanish word for chutzpah?

So, basically, what he’s saying is: America should keep its borders open to illegal immigration so that, instead of creating jobs and making something of themselves, Latin leaders want to export their people (including all costs to America: e.g. healthcare, housing, education, infrastructure, etc) and simply import the dineros. They offer no greater economic plan.

Now, that’s shameful.

And to top it all off, he also suggests that the U.S. should subsidize its “poor neighbors” and “educate [their] kids.” Aren’t we already doing that?

Reuters ends the article with a little heart-tugging (cue the violins):

“Every year, thousands of Mexicans risk their lives sneaking across the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border, much of it desert, in search of work to escape poverty.”

Maybe if Latin leaders were more concerned about building up their economies and developing their own nation rather than looking for handouts, we wouldn’t have this problem. During the Great Depression, what country aided America? Nada.

Let history be a lesson.

UPDATE: (11/5)

Reuters has this update:

Ending an Ibero-American summit focusing on migration, leaders from 24 countries issued a special statement expressing “deep concern” about the fence plan.

“The building of the wall doesn’t help us go in the right direction,” said Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

But it’s not about you.

It’s about U.S.

The right word you should have used at the end is not “Nada”, is “Ninguno”.

Anyway, I agree that USA has the right to close their frontiers.

But it also must stop CIAing other countries, incentivating the guerillas, buying cocaine, and disturbing governments to protect and increase its markets.

Closing the frontier is a sword that should cut both ways.

    How about Spain’s wall?
