Memo To Karl Rove: The American Public Is Tired Of Runaway Immigration

And we need to do something about it.

Some may attempt to turn this into a controversy, but the memo from Rep. Lamar Smith to Karl Rove which recently surfaced does nothing except show that some Republicans, at least, are taking the immigration issue seriously.

You read the polls better than anyone,” writes Rep. Smith to Karl Rove. “So you know that the majority of American people (including Democrats and Hispanics) feel illegal immigration is a serious problem. A two to one majority also opposes a guest worker program that would allow illegal immigrants to “stay” in the United States (CBS News Poll).”

Couldn’t agree more. Nice to know that politicians are finally on notice.

Smith continues:

Enforcement of immigration laws, current and new, should come first to satisfy the increasing public demand for border security. It will not be enough to pass enforcement bills this fall that will take a year or two to produce results. Current laws need to be better enforced so that the American people see results immediately. (Liberals can easily and accurately be painted as opposing enforcement).”

Yes, that’s because they do.

How reassuring it should be for everyone to read about a politician — not standing in front of TV cameras, but privately within the halls of Congress — showing genuine awareness and concern for “satisfying…public demand.” (Namely, the will of the people)

It appears that some opinion polls really do matter.

Almost too good to be true. But according to Michelle Malkin:

“The liberal website Raw Story has published an interesting immigration memo from Rep. Lamar Smith to Karl Rove that was inadvertently sent to a Democratic congressman. Some conservatives have questioned the authenticity of the document. Well, I just called Rep. Smith’s office and confirmed that it is real and unaltered. (Emphasis ours) Rep. Smith’s staffer explained the gaffe by saying that “something went on with the fax machine.”

Oh well. It happens, and thanks for sharing.

Perhaps President Bush should consider nominating Rep. Lamar Smith for heading the the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. He’s got our vote.

Sent several hundred e-mail, faxes and letters regarding illegal immigration to political hacks and pundits in 2002-03 while I was unemployed. Have see firsthand the idiocy and severe consequences of illegal immigration and it’s negative impact upon Southern California environment and quality of life. Biggest problem with illegal immigration: the vast amount of fraud perpetrated upon the state and federal Governments and upon insurance companies by illegal alien fraud rings- 10’s of billions stolen from California taxpayers to subsidize illegal aliens for health and education. Surprise, many of these illegals will stay in California only temporarily while shuttling money back home, in many cases to purchase land or dwellings in Mexico to retire after they have fleeced the California taxpayer.

  5. California Conservative » Report: Illegal Immigration Has Increased Says:

[...] Due to imminent threats of terrorism and national efforts to bolster homeland security, and thanks in large part to the publicity of the Minuteman Project, the media and politicians have finally been forced to recognize the crisis — and, hopefully, deal with it. Border security gained national attention last month after the governors of two states, Arizona and New Mexico, declared states of emergency on their borders with Mexico. The governors cited security shortcomings by the federal government. [...]
