Two Sides To Each Coin
I was struck by how differently two people can respond to the same sentence. Here’s a glimpse at how Barack Obama reacted to Hillary’s now famous plantation sentence:
Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday defended Sen. Hillary Clinton for describing the House of Representatives as a “plantation,” saying he felt her choice of words referred to a “consolidation of power” in Washington that squeezes out the voters. The senator told CNN’s “American Morning” he believed that Clinton was merely expressing concern that special interests play such a large role in writing legislation that “the ordinary voter and even members of Congress who aren’t in the majority party don’t have much input.”
By contrast, here’s how First Lady Laura Bush reacted:
“It think it’s ridiculous, it’s a ridiculous comment,” Mrs. Bush told reporters when asked about the remark during a return flight to Washington following her four-day swing through West Africa.
Frankly, Obama’s remarks are the lamest spinning I’ve ever heard about a Clinton statement. He doesn’t believe it for a split second. Considering that Mrs. Clinton was speaking to an African-American audience in Harlem, what was the image that she was trying to cultivate? The image that “special interests play such a large role in writing legislation” that the minority party couldn’t offer input? Or, more likely, is it that she wanted to incite racial hatred against Republicans? The words may change, but the tune stays the same.
If I commissioned a poll of Americans, anyone want to bet that 90+ percent of the people would say Mrs. Clinton was trying to incite racial hatred? That’s where I’d put my money.
If I were giving him a grade on that spin, I’d give Obama an F. And that’s only because there isn’t a lower grade.
On the other hand, Laura Bush’s statement represents how the vast majority of Americans feel about Mrs. Clinton’s statement.
In viewing Obama’s and Mrs. Bush’s statements, you see one of the major differences between Democrats and Republicans. Generally speaking, Democrats mince words and try obfuscation when they say something stupid whereas Republicans are the straight talkers. It’s just that simple.
