Enough With The Spin

President Obama is making the same mistake in defending mandates that Mitt Romney made when he tried rationalizing the mandating of health care: Both men have said that this is no different than requiring people to buy car insurance. That’s an intellectually vacant argument.

At best, it’s an apples to green beans comparison.

We all agree that the Baucus bill would require people to buy health insurance or get fined for not buying health insurance. In that respect, Mitt Romney’s and President Obama’s arguments withstand scrutiny. That’s the only aspect in which I can accurately say that.

The Baucus bill, like the Democrats’ other bills, tells consumers what coverages are required before the federal government considers a policy a valid health insurance plan. Like all other government health care mandates, it tells consumers what things must be covered by insurance. In Minnesota, one of the mandates is that everyone, including single men and the elderly, must have neonatal coverage. In Massachusetts, in vitro fetilization coverage is mandated for every policy.

States don’t extensively mandate coverages on car insurance. They don’t tell people that they have to purchase comp or collision insurances. They don’t tell people what the amount of their deductible is. If President Obama and Sen. Baucus want to use the car insurance argument, then let’s demand that they eliminate all mandates from Sen. Baucus’ legislation.

Until they’re willing to adopt these provisions, I’ll highlight the intellectual inconsistency of their arguments. If they insist on including those provisions in the bill, then it’s important that we insist that they stop using that argument. After all, why should we accept an intellectually feeble argument?
