I'm from another "C" state, Connecticut but what got me here was a conversation I had the other night.

A friend said that an interesting chap running for president said that Mars was warming too.

He suggested that this might be something larger than just our green house gases.

Of course I could not believe what I was hearing. Aside from the fact that Mars is half the size of earth, twice the distance from the sun and has a year of more than six hundred days, if Mars were warming via the sun's heat, we would be toast.

Please, come up with someone with matter between their ears before you post them for president. We've had enough of Mars people. There's one in White House. Have you seen his ears?

Admittedly, I am not a scientist, but do have a general knowledge of some of the scientific specialties.

As I understand it, the planets further from the sun than earth are warming at a rate at least as great as the earth is warming.

Now, does it take a verifiable expert scientist to figure out that maybe, just maybe, it's not our SUVs that are causing those warmings, too? Is it possible that there may be another explanation for the warming?

And as far as "peer-reviewed" goes, if the powers of editing lie entirely with a single point of view, do you suppose that a contrary view will get positive review and publication, especially from a group that's afraid of its own shadow? For every "expert" (say, some movie starlet, ex-veep or singer, for instance) that tells us the earth will burn to a crisp next week, I can name you a scientist with real credentials in the field of historical meteorology that says this warming is only a part of a natural cycle that's been happening since time immemorable.

And from what I can deduce, dumb country boy that I am, it is the alarmists that are out in left field (if they're even in the ballpark), and the (pardon the expression) cooler heads that make sense.

And algore isn't even in the right book, let alone on the same page.

"Global warming" seems to me to be nothing more than a blatant attempt by some to gain more control over our lives, while living a lifestyle that reflects their own true beliefs about it, what with their private jets, mansions and oversized SUVs.

The distance between Fred Thompsons comments and current the understanding of climate change is vast. Republicans, of which I am one, need to get their heads out of the sand on this issue. The risks are too great. Goto the websites of the top 25 graduate universities in earth science. Goto the websites of an reputable scientific organization. Look in the peer reviewed journals. Fred Thompson is throwing red meat to you people, but does not understand this issue and it's relationship with energy. John McCain and Guliani have a much better appreciation for the issue. The last thing this party needs is another politician who shoots from the gut on complex issues without even really understanding the issues.

Sounds like daron christopher is nit-picking.

Look at it this way, daron: When ol' Fred & I were going to secondary school, Pluto was a planet because scientists (who never, ever make mistakes, right?) said it was.

Now that has been "debunked."

Which is it, sir? Are we to believe everything infallible "scientists" tell us, even ones with "sterling" reputations?

So, if we are, the world is still flat, phrenology is science, we will find "the missing link" someday, and we really do need to panic because earth will burn to a crisp in another ten years.

Find something real to bitch about.

While he's on the subject of science, someone might want to tell Fred Thompson that Pluto is not a planet anymore.

Politician will jump on the global warming when they realize they can find something else to tax people and they don't have to spend the money on the reason they collected it, see New York and fee on phone bills for enhanced 911 being charged but not doing anything about it.

Ok, I'm a conservative and Nancy and the Dems are not my favorite people. What truly disappoints me is the blind naivete that these folks (and some dumb Republicans, I confess) have regarding global warming just makes my heart sink. Logic and reason are thrown to the wind. Warm, fuzzy feelings rule the day. God help us all.
