Chavez Claims U.S. Is Planning Invasion

Dictator ChavezThe best defense is a strong offense.

AP reports: “Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Thursday that his government is preparing for a possible U.S. invasion and he warned that such ‘aggression’ would send gasoline in the United States prices soaring higher. The U.S. government repeated that it is not planning any such thing.”

If the United States tried to attack Venezuela by a direct invasion, forget the oil,” he said during a two-hour news conference beamed live to Venezuela. “Everyday, we send 1.5 million barrels to the United States.”

Such posturing. Yet another reason for us to explore alternative sources.

In an interview with British Broadcasting Corp. radio aired earlier Thursday, Chavez said he had evidence to prove the U.S. government was planning an invasion.

Chavez said he believed the reason Washington was plotting an invasion was to take control of Venezuela’s oil fields.

Didn’t the leftist agitators say that’s what America was planning to do in Iraq? It appears that we haven’t turned the spigot on yet. And never will — unless we’re paying for it.

Meanwhile, Israel canceled a lucrative deal to upgrade Venezuelan warplanes under American pressure, Israel TV reported Thursday.

The report said Israel was to install its own systems in U.S.-made F-16 fighters for the Venezuelan air force, but the U.S. government forced Israel to call off the deal. No dollar figure for the deal was given.

“Under American pressure?” Translation: Our government probably had to subsidize the cancellation. Israel should know better than to sell to dictators.

America always has to clean up the mess.

    BOLIVIAN FREE TRADE MARCH

Thousands of Bolivian workers marched on the U.S. embassy yesterday to demand … A FREE TRADE PACT WITH THE U.S.

Now who knew that? For god sakes give them their free trade pact! We’ll all benefit if we can buy Bolivian goods! I lift my first cup …

Why do you call him a dictator? You do realize he won election and the referendum with higher percentages than Bush, right? He got 59% on the referendum last year.

  3. California Conservative Says:

Do you know what kind of electoral margins Saddam had during his reign?

  4. Russell Says:

With international observers vouching for the election? The Carter Center and the OAS both called the recall a fair election. I’ll send you links if you like.

I guess what galls me most is that the same people who are calling Chavez a dictator thought Rios Montt, Somoza, Pinochet, et. al. were just peachy and were all too happy to give them arms with which to kill their citizens.

  5. Russell Says:

Also, you still haven’t given an argument for why it’s accurate to call him a dictator. Or is it just because so many other people on the Right are saying it?

  6. California Conservative Says:

    Russell,

As for Jimmy Carter certifying anything besides peanut butter, read this.

Much has been written on the subject of Hugo Chavez. We don’t need to repeat the effort. (But feel free to peruse our archives)

Good luck with your graduate work in political science. Study hard, and don’t get lost in the ivory tower.

    Keep it real.

What you call “posturing” from Chavez about the US attack plans, the State Dept. called “ridiculous,” “wild charges” and “untrue” just a couple months ago.

Trouble is a report the Pentagon had to make public today (the Quadrennial Review) listed Venezuela as one of the top 5 threats in the world to the US, thereby requiring “full spectrum” attack planning. They were labled a “rogue nation” along with Syria. I wonder what a country who has been complicit in too many coup plots to count in Latin America would rank?
