So I guess that Cardin won the Democrat primary, against former Congressman Kweisi Mfume? It seems that that will help Mr. Steele.

I was reading, just the other day, an article about the health problems that former U.S. Senator Edward W. Brooke (R-MA) has been facing. There were two black U.S. Senators elected during Reconstruction - both Lousiana Republicans. Mr. Brooke was the first black U.S. Senator after Reconstruction, and he is also a Republican - though like Jackie Robinson, he was a liberal New Englander Republcan.

When our state [quite regretably] elected Carol Moseley-Braun, she became the first black Democrat in the U.S. Senate. Our current junior Senator is the second.

I had commented, some time ago, upon seeing news like this (possibly at Jason Smith's weblog), that if the news about Steele is a sign of a shift in the voting patterns of African-Americans, then that is very, very refreshing... And it is certainly time!!

It would be great if Mr. Steele is elected, and if Vernon Robinson wins as well. There have been many black Republican candidates running for the U.S. House and Senate in recent years, but unfortunately, most have lost.

That needs to change... And this will hopefully <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12466213/" rel="nofollow">be the year</a>.
