Within minutes of the end of President Bush’s speech to the VFW, Minority Leaders Reid and Pelosi issued two of the most inane statements I’ve ever seen. In other words, it was typical Reid-Pelosi drivel. Here’s Pelosi’s statement:

“Today, once again, President Bush demonstrated that he is in denial about his historic blunder in Iraq. We must win the war on terror, but the war in Iraq is the wrong war. Today, just as it has since the war began, Iraq is weakening our ability to fight the war on terrorism. The strain that the Iraq war has put on our military has crippled our ability to prosecute the war on terrorism and has dangerously limited our ability to respond to real challenges to our national security around the world.
“Mr. Bush’s failed war in Iraq come at a huge cost, first and foremost in human lives, and at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars. It has also had a tremendous cost to reputation, damaging our ability to engage other countries in diplomacy to make the world safer. Democrats are proposing a new direction with policies that are tough and smart that will make our country safer, our military stronger, and the world more stable.”

Ms. Pelosi misunderestimates the importance of winning in Iraq. Does she think that the terrorists and Baathists will simply lay down their weapons? It should be obvious that Saddam’s loyalists are intent on returning to power. If we leave, they’ll retake the country, which means that our military’s sacrifices will be for naught.

Her statement that “Democrats are proposing a new direction with policies that are tough and smart that will make our country safer” is utter nonsense. How “tough” is it to make a promise to a fledgling democracy, then back out of that promise? Frankly, I’d think that anyone can do that. Pulling out won’t do anything to make the US safer or the world more stable.

Here’s Reid’s statement:

“No matter how many speeches the President gives, the truth is that his failed policies have taken the country in a dangerous direction. The American people know that five years after September 11th, we are not as safe as we should and could be. Iraq is in crisis, our military is stretched thin, and terrorist groups and extremist regimes have been strengthened and emboldened across the Middle East and the world. It is time for a new direction. Democrats will lead the American people with tough and smart policies that will make us safer by beginning the redeployment of troops from Iraq, refocusing our efforts on the war on terror, and protecting Americans from terrorism here at home.”

Sen. Reid’s statements have sounded alot like the 2004 Democratic Convention. It seemed like every other sentence contained the phrase strong and smart. Why does Reid think leaving Iraq is either tough or smart? As I said earlier about Ms. Pelosi, anybody can break a promise. That doesn’t take any courage.

I’d doubt that Pelosi and Reid are ignorant enough to think Iran will stop funding the sectarian violence through Muqtada al-Sadr’s militia. I suspect that their goal is to con people into believing that Iraq is a disaster, a foolhardy goal if ever there was one.
